Everybody knows New York City is an expensive place to live. But the United Nations wants to know if affordable housing is so tough to come by that it actually violates human rights.

The gdam UN never ceases to amaze me.
Haven't we kicked them out of our country yet?
Can someone please define 'affordable housing' for me and also point me to the derivative of the so-called 'right to adequate housing'?
Affordable housing = 25-33% of total income of the working poor or poverty line, cost of living adjusted, which ever is lesser.
The poverty line was determined by the price of food per mouth times three in the 1960s. So, there isn't much to compare modern expenses versus 1960s. Most Americans spend more on healthcare in a month that they do on food. In fact, the cost of owning a single vehicle and the cost of medical insurance are often three to five times the cost of food in a given month.
The poverty line in New York for instance is about 21,000 a year for a single person under the age of 65.
So at 33% of monthly salary, an affordable apartment in New York should cost about 575 dollars.
i think the issue here should be exemplified not by n.y., but by Lagos...
