Last week, the Santa Monica City Council nixed a landmarking from February 2008 for SCI-Arc's original building on Nebraska Avenue. Developers successfully convinced the council to rescind the Landmarks Commission's decision to pave the way for—what else—condos. Oddly enough, Ray Kappe could care less, as he says the building has been altered beyond salvation.

live and learn. 70's.. students lived and learned in their rombics... inside the school
our diplomas were written like modern poetry and required the recommendation of our classmates and teachers
HEY, i grew up there!
looks like they messed it up when they put those little bathroom windows on the first floor. who is xubaz anyway, screw...
agreed with ray kappe, “a pretty good 30s modern look. It had good character, but now it’s got dumb character.”
i am saddened regardless. sci arc's soul was established there.
1 minute silence please!
this is where reyner banham to zaha hadid (and anybody else in between) spoke to audience who loved questioning the authority. it was true trailblazing that no money could ever buy...
shine on your crazy diamonds, THANK YOU!
now that's a tribute!!
that is sad--not to compare such an amazing space to a more banal one, or demolition to renovation, but I remember the sense of loss I felt in seeing the old, cluttered, well-loved studios I had spent so much time in wiped clean and re-organized just a few months after graduating. Condolences, Orhan.

too bad sci-arc is now just Columbia light, there is not much "questioning the authority" going on there anymore.
Why they the hell are we columbia ? They copied us before we copied AA.
