65 countries celebrate Buy Nothing Day. Of course, consumerist media don't like it. Kalle Lasn of Adbusters Magazine explains why. CNN lady can't stand buying nothing. She keeps saying, c'mon c'mon...
i do think that all this new-found green talk won't result in too much, especially on the consumer end, if we continue to refuse to acknowledge that overconsumption largely by the global north is one of the primary (if not *the* primary) causes of environmental problems.
i reserve this word for special occasions so that when i say it i can mean it: on the evidence of only that interview, i hate cnn lady, and i don't even know her name. she made me so angry, spouting back every meaningless argument ever made against overconsumption. grrrrrrrr.
kalle lasn, on the other hand, seemed passionate and intelligent enough that i want to know more about him!
I had completely forgotten about the US/pig commercial, which has been floating around (not purchased by any networks) fro several eyars now. It's a pretty palpable image, I think.
Coincidentally, on Black Friday Angus and I did a little craft project that turned a used salt container into a pig! He even tatooed it a la Wim Delvoye. too cute.
keep in mind, our role as designers is to create things that will ultimately be consumed.
i think the important message is to be smart about what you consume -- do not participate in the modern, perverted holiday traditions (going shopping at 4am to get some sweet deals).
make a holiday tradition of spending time with your family and friends instead of spending money.
