An up-and-coming Chicago architectural firm that has predicted fresh water will be more precious than oil one day was named the winner Thursday of a national design competition asking architects to design their city 100 years in the future. Here's a direct link to the winning project - pretty cool.
here is ARO's winning scheme in NYC
and
Eric Owen Moss's winning scheme in LA
so I guess there will be a battle royal for the final best future city between NYC-CHI-LA.
The battle royale is already over: UrbanLab is the winner.
oh man, I'm totally out of it. I thought it was still to be decided. I was hoping for more battle in my royal...
CHI is the winner by large margin for sure.
how come chicago always lead?
because of the institutional domination of the windy city
john, could you enlighten us on that -- Chicago's institutional domination?
Everyone there has been institutionalized.
Except for John. And Alex Trevi. And UrbanLab.
Chicago was in the lead because Urban Lab sent emails telling everyone in the architecture community to vote for them.
This prize isn't based on schemes. But what difference does it make, they won 10 large.
its no different than thom mayne for the NYC 2012 popular vote...they sent out a call for the masses to make them the most popular.
all I can say is that the areas institutions put in the necessary effort to motivate the masses. you know the chicago credo I'm sure bothands..."vote early, vote often!" machine politics was born and raised here. no one does it better, or rather worse.
That is true, the method of motivation. But it proves that in no way is Urban Lab's scheme the best. It just proves that they do the best PR, right?
i vote aro's proposal...but that's because they sent me an email asking them...and besides i don't like chicago very much.
urban lab doesnt do much publicity - i dont think they even make any money to hire PR. I think their scheme was well done, timely and interesting. Not the visual masterbatation the other 2 did. Dare we say they won against some big ballers fair and square,?
I think both AROs and Urban Labs are very good schemes.
I agree, evilplaypus. UrbanLab is more interested in doing something than just talking about it, and their work shows that. I appreciated the focus of their scheme, and the consideration that architecture (buildings) may not save the world.
