There are 1500 opera fans in Kazakhstan?
Who knew...
According to available demographic info there are 5.5 persons per km², many of whom I'm thinking would just as soon spend money insulating their yurt in time for the minus 40 degree winters than spend a year's wages on a ticket to see Don Juan. And with those demographics it seems to me that travelling 300 km to hear the fat lady sing would strain the hardiest of yaks.
It's hard to take these projects seriously when one thinks hard about the history of monumentalism and its totalitarian origins, not to mention that the nature of the intended benificiaries seldom share much in common with the indigenous populations...
