The tell-tale sign that a juicy project is cooking in Chicago: The Art Insitute is expected to be given permission today to land in anticipation of a 230,000sf addition... designed by Dr. Beaubourg, Renzo Piano. | chictrib
I firmly believe this will happen as the AIC has a job listing for Director of Design and Construction. Oh and by the way their also hiring for Curator of Architecture...
This job posting below the Director of Design seems to suggest that:
Vice President of Marketing
Department: Marketing and Public Affairs
MC/653W
Duties: Working with a team of client representatives, and chairing the Art Institute of Chicago's Marketing Committee, which includes representatives from relevant curatorial departments, the director's office, and the Departments of Development, Visitor Services, Museum Shop and Graphic Design, Photographic and Communications Services, this position is responsible for developing and executing the overarching marketing and brand strategy for the Art Institute as approved by the president and director of the museum. Highest priorities in the coming years include promoting a major and aggressive membership drive and promoting and managing media relations with regard to the building of a large, very visible, and highly important new building designed by Renzo Piano, which will comprise galleries for modern and contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, and new media.
wake up you all. the cd's are done on this one, the whole move is just to slip slip slip by the preservationalist....expect the bull dozers soon...say monday? remember, this is chicago and the rules are their to know how to get around them. thats all this one is.
what i dont understand is that my buddy, rj, was director of design there ... so guess not any more.
i know the AIC lost their shirts in the stock market and had some bad investments which hit hard.
what i didnt understand is that stanley is now a professed expert at frank loyd wright[arent we all in chicago!!], at least thats what john zulkowsky, ex-aic, newly appointed director of the flw westcott house called him when he appointed stanely master architect of the institution.
According to a February Sun-Times article, the official groundbreaking of the addition will coincide with the Pritzker Prize festivities at the end of May. Article available in this Google cache. We'll see if they stick to that date.
I liked some comment that Miss Representation made (I think) about every damn museum addition being done by Piano these days. Although, must say, the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas is totally flawless. Absolutely Flawless.
but i have to say, my buddy rj, who was director of the aic gave a presentaton once on the piano museum addition and those guys had 1 year for schematic design, 3 day design workshops in italy, paris etc., with the client. a-fee in the range of 25%+. now my buddy is not too worldly. and as i saw it....."when ya got the section figured out, why change it" piano takes the clients though the process and arrives at the same conclusion. a wheel is round i guess. when ya got it, why change it.
for all you lot looking for a thesis topic, take piano and look at his museums. all them same variation -- but great nevertheless.

I know TED I saw the model, but things change all the time. Who knows maybe they fired RP and were planning a competition headed by Stanley.
