Xixian GreenMall is a central median parkway at the Xixian New Area urban development near Xi’an, China. Initially, the land was designated as open landscape with vegetation. Generating symbiotic activity with the adjacent urban program, the proposal segments the parkway into four civic zones: Sports Center, Animation Center, Amphitheatre, and Community Center. Submerged in a botanical garden, a subterranean commercial shopping mall and international food court connect to surrounding building sites via all-weather circulation corridors. Land formations resulting from earthquakes and landslides (i.e. faults, caverns, cliffs, and jagged ridges) inspired the concept for the site landscape and architecture. Theoretically, the land opened during such natural phenomenon allowing daylight and greenery to penetrate the subterranean space.
