Located in Alhambra, CA, the project consists of renovating an approximately 1,200 sq. ft. existing mortuary storage space into a funeral home targeted at an Asian demographic. The program is comprised of an outdoor patio, kitchen, gathering/seating areas, viewing area, and bathroom. There are several elements of the building influenced by Asian culture and architecture. For instance, the patio is covered by an outdoor trellis enclosed in bamboo walls. Furthermore, there is a wok station in the kitchen to prepare offerings for the deceased. The folding doors on the northeast entry wall create a welcoming indoor/outdoor space. The deep wood stains and open space facilitate moments of contemplation and reflection.
