i've had my bike for a few weeks now and have yet to muster up the courage (or conditioning) to actually ride it to work yet!
i think it had something to do with the first time i rode my new bike in traffic. people yelled at me! someone passing in a dualie truck called me a, well let's just say a not-so-nice word!
ha ha ha, yeah, it is a pretty cool bike, even got some compliments @ venice beach.
i think it's also that i was riding on the street in traffic (how you're supposed to ride a bike). people don't really want to share the road with bikes, and so many people ride their bikes on the sidewalk (which you shouldn't do). oh well! screw 'em!
Cris- I am practicing defensive bicycling, and have only been honked at twice in the past couple weeks. And one of those I think was a friend saying hi, not a real angry driver. Look up 'bike commuting' and 'biking in traffic' on Google, and you'll see a whole slew of links about how to mingle with traffic in a safe, corteous way. I read through a ton of those things before I dared set out on the street.
oh, and don't just take the same way to a place that you would in your car. Choose your route with care- whether it's a two lane road or a four lane road, pick roads where the righthand lane is extra-wide, and there aren't a ton of business driveways (most likely to get hit by car turning onto the street), with lowish speed limits. I take a totally different route to work by bike than I do by car.
I wouldn't mind getting a bike once I move to NYC. The thought of riding around on Manhattan streets scares the living shit out of me, but it would be nice to bike around in the parks or along the river.
speaking of biking;
this morning i got up with a huge headache and instead of going to work, i watched this great movie 'breaking away' which was filmed in bloomingdale indiana. it was town boys 'cutters' against the preppie college students and some other themes work worked in beautifully involving around bike racing.
i thought it was one of the best movies i saw. at the end underdog won and my headache was gone. go cutters go.
gotta sign off for a bit - have been under a tornado warning for the mpls metro for the past 20 minutes. that storm is off to the north (I'm in the south), but another storm is heading straight towards me. Should be back in an hour or so.
so will sbd1 make his target with destiny while I'm powered down?????
oh, I know the master cleanse. Have been meaning to go on it again. Hope you enjoy it WK. It taught me a lot about stigmas for food and what food is first and foremost - nutrition for my body.
i'm so not motivated today, just counting the hours till i can get out of here. i've beat every project I have to death while everyone else is complaining they have SO much work to do (as usual).
Which makes me think: Why do most of my coworkers "disappear" for several hours out of the day? I wish I had the guts to take 3 hours lunches twice a week, and whatever it is they do. Maybe that's why they never can get their work done.
I've got way too much energyyyyyyyyy today! Why do I want to go outside and run around, when I haven't even taken my usual caffiene pill, and I should be completely exhausted from the uphill slog that is the morning half of my commute?
I look outside the office window at trees dancing in the breeze, and I am jealous of their freedom.
If I still feel good tonight, I'm definitely biking again tomorrow. I'm not against using the car sometimes while I have it, but if I keep feeling this good, I'll keep biking until I have a reason to do otherwise. Fuck, I feel like I'm in high school again, this is amazing. I was definitely not expecting this.
Why, in my many, many doctors appointments in which I discussed with several different doctors how I wanted to sleep all the time, did none of them suggest getting out of my car and putting my legs to use?
Wait, wait. I'm going to try and not get too excited here because of one good day. Must wait and see how this goes over the long run, it might wear off.
my cousin (who is a little out of shape and works too much) was having health problems like headaches and numbness in her legs. she had been seeing doctors and specialists for some time, and getting all sorts of bloodwork done to rule out things like lupis. They couldn't find anything wrong with her and told her they thought she had MS and even put her on medication for it. She continuted to get tested only to rule out MS. They finaly concluded she just needed to be more active. Good lesson for me. Whenever I make an excuse to not excersize, I think of that.
yeah, one doctor was about two tests away from diagnosing me with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, but was hesitant to do so because I was an architecture student, and she was unable to rule out lifestyle as being the cause of my problems. Thing was, I could never follow her sleep and nutrition guidelines for long enough to see whether a change in lifestyle would alleviate the tiredness!
I've been wearing my architecture sucks t-shirt all week when i get home. I think subconsciously i want to return to waking at 10, going for coffee at 11 and napping at 3. What a life...perhaps
Anyhow i love you all, but it feels weird with no pearls of wisdom from Liberty...I think I'm going to hold my breathe until she returns. Okay maybe not.
when i look at that 100, centered like that, it looks like a strong man trying to balance an enormous amount of weight as it cantilevers off two sides...101 should start the next row and 100 should be a different color.
don't worry, cris. 100 will move to the left as it gets followed by other numbers.
what i'm wondering is if the line of all three digit numbers will be longer or shorter than the lines above. when we went from single digits to double the we lost 4 pages per line. maybe we'll only get 15 pages onto this line...
on another note: went to see michael graves speak about louisville's humana building last night. this year we celebrate the aia 150th anniv, the local aia chapter's 100th anniv, and the 25th anniv of the humana building. a great celebratory event with lots of regular folk talking about and excited about architecture.
mr graves was clever and fun and can't help but be an amazing teacher - even to an audience of hundreds. it was organized in a refreshingly non-lecture format: he sat with the dean of the ky arch school and talked in a sort of conversational style, telling stories, reminiscing, but always getting back to the point of 'why' and selling it.
whether or not you like his work, he's passionate about it and believes in what he's done and argues for it very effectively. it helps that the humana building was SO beautifully realized, really well made, and that 25 years later it probably looks even better than when it was built. probably (my biased opinion) his best building ever, instrumental in the rebirth of a major chunk of our downtown.
a touch of class: he remarked that architects shouldn't publicly decry another architects' work before the project is built - even that it's unethical. noted his project for the whitney and some others that were actually killed after other archs criticisms made enough controversy to stall fundraising. for that reason, he said, he would not comment on rex's museum plaza...
i'm not sure i agree with that. if we hadn't spoken up, faddy haddy might very well be getting their library proposal built in grosse pointe...and at the expense of the breuer building
what is unethical about calling a crappy project 'shit'? being ethical is maintaining high professional standards and not building crap. Mr. Graves has been very unethical in my book for foisting mediocre buildings all around the world for very high fees.
it's good that his whitney project wasn't built- we have a better museum now with out being stuck in gravian po-mo purgatory.
I think it's not necessarily unethical for an architect to speak badly about a project, but I think that it's unethical to do so idly. If an architect goes public badmouthing someone else's project, they'd better have a damned good reason to do so and genuinely feel that the project will damage the community.

rationalist, hats off!

you know, the last post at the bottom of this page will only be post #9900. But post #9901 will be page 100.
Cris, you have to ride your sweet bike! Although I will admit that the reason I scrapped my last bike is because I looked like a sissy on it.
ha ha ha, yeah, it is a pretty cool bike, even got some compliments @ venice beach.

ooh, that looks good. I hadn't seen any bits about non-standard intersections anywhere else.
I wouldn't mind getting a bike once I move to NYC. The thought of riding around on Manhattan streets scares the living shit out of me, but it would be nice to bike around in the parks or along the river.

9901? SBD1 will not be happy, and that makes me happy

good luck, treekiller! Don't let the trees get you.
I was once killed in Minneapolis by a tornado...it sucked.

perhaps your morning commute (on the bike, right?) has given you the extra energy?
rationalist it's because you rode your bike to work, and that got your endorphins going! They say that exercise is best in the morning.
Strawbeary, I'm not really enjoying this per se, but I'm doing it nonetheless. If it's taught me anything it's how much I love food.
what day are you on?
Day three, right?
If I still feel good tonight, I'm definitely biking again tomorrow. the last storm was anticlimactic, 5 minutes of downpour and not much wind or lightning. still I'd rather keep my computer safe from surges...
being active is good - that's what my missus (the expert in all things health and weight) keeps telling me.

i need to install our new dishwasher and save 200$. the machine itself is 325$.
any trade secrets on that? it seems pretty simple.
.....
trying for 100, sbd2?
I'M BACK!
Now I can finish packing and go to Rome...phew
I was asked to make the last comment on the page.
BYE PAGE 99!!!
oh no, i effed it up. Sorry.
You are such a nerd....
ahahahahahaha!!!
omg, that is great!
My life is complete. I can die now.
Oh, DubK, you meant well.
Congrats SBD1, and the #1 comment.
ok, so, should the 100 be centered like that?
i kind of want it to be left justified!
oh man, i need to get a life... =\
we are a sad bunch...but loving it!
I've been wearing my architecture sucks t-shirt all week when i get home. I think subconsciously i want to return to waking at 10, going for coffee at 11 and napping at 3. What a life...perhaps
has to be one of the coolest things i've come across today.
note he changed his name back in celebration...and changed mine in response to my disobedience....
whoa.... afternoon crash. I need a nap now.
pizza, pizza
Oh no rationalist! Wake up!
I rather like the little "100" centered at the bottom like that.
Pizza sounds great, BTW.
pizza, pizza
render onto puddles, what is puddles. now knock it off goddammit
what's with the pizzas I don't get it.
Anyhow i love you all, but it feels weird with no pearls of wisdom from Liberty...I think I'm going to hold my breathe until she returns. Okay maybe not.
Scotland must not have any cyber cafes....cause their so damn cool.

Yes, He is still in a wheelchair.
