This house from John Portman has hit the market in coastal Georgia for $40 million. The Peachtree Center architect’s vacation home from 1986 until his death in 2017, Entelechy II is a 13,000-square-foot design with seven bedrooms and eight full baths. The Robb Report says it "represents an apotheosis of the innovative (if sometimes underappreciated) architect and developer’s dramatic signature style."
Sotheby's International Realty has the listing with a special video tour. Another beloved architect's home, George Homsey’s Third Bay Tradition style former personal residence in San Francisco's Liberty Hill Historic District, hit the market recently for $2.45 million. Writer Colin Marshall's 2020 dive into the legacies of Portman and fellow neo-futurist Syd Mead can be found here.

Amazing design, one of my favorite architects as of today!
Now see, this is a mansion, not a McMansion. This is a MANSION. It's absolutely gorgeous, but you'd need a full time staff to maintain it.
This is the best thing I've even seen.
$40 million? 7 bedrooms, and 8 full bathrooms. What the hell, how many underpaid architects did it take to make this monument to the inherent problems within our profession? A monument to ego of the architect made real. Burn it to the ground.
Portman's wealth was primarily generated by him also being the developer of many of his projects. Many in the architecture establishment of the period resented this.
So?
We consulted with their development group for couple of projects. They were very good to work with and for a change, quite organized. Maybe cuz they came from architectural roots, they were easier to work with
So? Because Portman was a change agent that charted a different course for his business. It showed that there are other ways to be an architect besides "starving artist". He was far better than the average AIA establishment-approved firm owner running the standard abusive business model of the "design-forward" architect via low staff salaries, long hours, and hire & fire. An example would be my old bosses who laid off 15% of the staff one Friday and then showed up the next week with new luxury cars and a new boat. I don't begrudge Portman enjoying the millions he earned from his architecture+development business.
I do begrudge any multimillionaire architect. It's obscene.
Well then, make sure you don't ever become one. If they haven't already, I'm sure your employers can arrange a salary level that will help you prevent that. . ;)
They have. I don't need to be a multimillionaire to be happy.
Reminds me of a fun LeCorbusier
A Glorious Mess!
It's been 4 days and I am still erect. Glorious!
You need to see a physician for erections lasting more than 4 hours, are you okay?
