The School of Design and Construction (SDC) at Washington State University is comprised of professional accredited programs in Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture and Construction Management. The school was formed in 2011 through the merger of the previous School of Architecture and Construction Management and the Departments of Interior Design and Landscape Architecture.
The goal of the SDC is to provide a collaborative, high quality educational experience that engages in innovative research and activitites to advance the design and construction of the physical environment. The hallmark of the SDC is that students receive exceptional undergraduate and graduate education while also having opportunities to integrate with allied disciplines. With alliances in the College of Engineering and the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences, students in the SDC have the ability to interact with a variety of disciplines required for knolwedge in the design and construction fields.
Our graduate programs also emphasize collaboration, as students in each discipline share required coursework and have the opportunity to integrate in teams for their graduate projects. All students have access to elective courses in each discipline, as well as an opportunity to participate in an integrated, international study tour. The SDC offers many courses in sustainable design and construction as well as specialized courses in design build. Students have the opportunity to become LEED associates prior to graduation as well as receive their DBIA Associate Certification.
Students at the SDC can work with faculty on significant, and real-world projects and research related to our constructed environment. For example, students may work with faculty in our Institute for Sustainable Design, as well as take advanced studios in our Integrated Design Experience (IdEX). Graduate students may also partner with professional design firms to create unique research programs that advance the body of knowledge in the professions. Our Integrated Education Symposiums also offer mechanisms for collaboration between students and professionals.
