World of Brut Art Culture is an organization established to be a barrier-free artistic charity to educate and improve the quality of life of people with disabilities. Its mission is to seek out and encourage the artistic talent of those with special needs. As people with special needs in China become increasingly visible within the general populace, WABC requires a space that can grow and adapt to changes and enhance its identity within the community.
As part of Watershed’s dedication to contribute pro-bono design services to organizations providing services to the future of China’s artists and designers, the project includes programs split over different levels in a heritage building development in Shanghai. It includes retail & cafe spaces, studios, collaborative office areas, and meeting rooms.
Utilising the concept of a kaleidoscope, the retail component is housed within two boxes - slightly offset from one
another - which are placed in the centre of the room on ground level. Faceted 'windows' allow visitors to view products within the box. Further display areas are provided within the box, which is entered through a single doorway.
Circulation space around the retail component include a cafe, WABC narrative and information and seating.
