The site is the 580 square meter rooftop of the five story office building of the international advertising agency W+K in Shanghai. The design has created a usable retreat that is flexible and multifunctional, consistent with the company’s culture, which enhances the day-to-day work experience of staff and can be used for a variety of special events and purposes.
Supplied with a number of large pieces of stackable modular furnishings taken from the ancient Chinese seven-piece puzzle ‘qi qiao ban’ or ‘tangrams’, the furniture scaled tiles fit together into a square and, when taken apart, can be arranged in any number of ways to create fanciful and useful spaces. The tangram pieces are the building blocks of a multi-functional fantasy garden for grown-ups.
