Watershed has been engaged as landscape consultant for the mixed-use development surrounding the new district city center of Luoyang.

As a cultural icon of Luoyang, the peony has been a key inspiration for the architecture, inspiring it’s form and aesthetics. Working with this as the conceptual foundation, the area around the mall is littered with peony petals, as if they had fallen off the buildings and been scattered by the wind and rain. Like the erosive loess soils of the region, these natural forces have created gullies and sunken areas below the stacked peony petals, revealing underlying features such as the stream bottom, basement level entries, etc.
