Tishman Speyer - The Springs Minfu Square

A 4,000 square metre urban plaza on the corner of Minfu Road and New Jiangwan Road at the heart of the 260,000 square metre mixed-use development ‘The Springs’ in New Jiangwan Town north of Shanghai, China.

The brief for Watershed is to create a landmark plaza to identify the center of the development. The client brief was to do so in a way in which the space can be convertible for large special events, not block views to adjacent commercial buildings, act as an arrival and entry point to the corporate campus block behind it, not rely on the use of water, and be consistent with the brand of the development.

The solution was to form a large open plaza which is occupied by a 28 metre diameter work of landscape art. The overall form of the piece is taken directly from the project logo. The paved area inside the central landscape sculpture dishes down in a gentle parabolic curve. This simple form provides opportunities for people to occupy and interact with the landscape in a variety of subtle and complex ways.

The central landscape sculpture has been accepted by the Shanghai authorities as qualifying as a work of Public Art.
