Paulo Mendes da Rocha wins the 2016 Venice Biennale Golden Lion
2006 Pritzker laureate Paulo Mendes da Rocha will be presented with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement on opening day of the 2016 Venice Biennale later this month. The Board of Directors noted the Sao Paulo architect for the timeless quality of his designs.
Closer look: COBE + MVRDV’s rockin’ new Ragnarock museum in Roskilde
COBE and MVRDV joined forces to design the new Ragnarock, a museum where rock, pop, and youth culture are housed under one roof. The museum is part of the larger ROCKmagneten masterplan that the architects won in 2011.
Santiago Calatrava to design falcon-like UAE Pavilion for Expo 2020 Dubai
Not long after winning the Dubai Creek Harbor tower, Calatrava scored the commission to design the UAE Pavilion for the 2020 World Expo in Dubai. Inspired by a falcon in flight, the UAE Pavilion will be built at the heart of the Expo.
The “(im)permanence” winners of the 2016 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers
The Architectural League of New York highlights emerging design talent in their annual Architectural League Prize for Young Architects + Designers program. North America-based designers who are out of school no more than 10 years are invited to submit their work to the portfolio competition.
Restored 19th-century Wilton's Music Hall named 2016 RIBA London Building of the Year
First launched in 1966, RIBA's yearly competition distinguishes some of the region's top-notch design projects in various architectural categories. The restored Wilton's Music Hall (pictured above) was deemed as London Building of the Year. Winners now have a chance to compete in the next phase of the RIBA's yearlong awards cycle: the National Awards.
2016 Cooper Hewitt National Design Award winners are announced
Moshe Safdie, Marlon Blackwell, and Bruce Mau are just a few of the notable 2016 winners in the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum National Design Awards. Launched at The White House in 2000, the Awards distinguish excellence, innovation, and social impact across 11 design disciplines.
American Academy in Rome announces 2016-17 Rome Prize winners + Italian Fellows
The prestigious fellowship supports the independent endeavors of young artists and scholars working in the arts and humanities. The lucky winners receive a stipend, workspace, and room and board at the Academy's 11-acre campus in Rome, where they can pursue their work for a period spanning from six months up to two years.
