Zhongfang Leling Health Care City

Located in the new Binhe district of Yinchuan, the 66,700 square meter site for the Phase One Health Care City includes a 6400 square meter skilled nursing home with 84 beds combined with a 10,000 square meter geriatric specialist hospital with 150 beds. The New Health Care City sits adjacent to the WARNER architecture studio designed International Medical City that is currently under construction. The reason for the adjacency is so that the smaller Health Care City can share some of the infrastructure resources from the larger facility. It is also expected that some of the International Medical City patients could become future Health Care City to utilize its medical services for needs for the elderly.

The rectangular site slopes gently to the west in the direction of the Huang He valley and has excellent access to roads in the new district to the north and to the east.

The marketing orientation is to provide a high level healthcare center that serves the elderly in Ningxia and surrounding provinces. While developed as one facility that will allow organic growth in future phases, the design reflects an approach that provides the necessary separation for a fully efficient specialist hospital and yet provides a tranquil environment for the nursing home residents.

The hospital is organized as a single linear bar sitting on top of a two story base. The base contains the Diagnostic and Treatment functions for both In-Patients and Out-Patients. Above the base is the three story bar that contains the In-Patient wards to the east and the Out-Patients clinics to the west.

The two story skilled nursing care home is organized as a series of bars running parallel to the lines of the hospital. The arrangement of the rooms and circulation creates a series of courtyards, each of which can be programmed for a variety of functions (outdoor activities, dining, outdoor therapy, therapeutic healing gardens).

The main public areas of the skilled nursing care facility and the hospital are connected on the west side with a public corridor to allow easy visitor and resident communication between the two. To the east, there is a similar corridor, but it's primary purpose is to link together the shared support functions. In between the two facilities are open courtyards further adding to the garden-like atmosphere about the combined facility.

The organization of the design reflects the inspiration from the adjacent International Medical City. Both sites sit at the juncture of two very different landscapes - west down toward the lush green Huang He valley, and east upward to a desert landscape. For the International Medical City, the design was conceived as a series of long fingers that emerge from the sandy desert to the east and open up to the views and greenery of the west. For the Healthcare City, is has a similar organization of long bars stretching from east to west. The difference is that the smaller Healthcare City has been designed so that the hospital and the skilled nursing care facility are, while both modern, are distinctly scaled to match their specific functions, hospital and residence.
