Xianyang First People’s Hospital is state-owned general hospital, formerly known as Regional People’s Hospital of Xianyang, founded in 1939. After continuous development it is now a modern medical institute integrated with medical care, teaching, research, prevention and health management care. It plans to build a comprehensive medical center with “One city with four centers”,which is an integration of Out-Patient, In-Patient, medical research, teaching and training, aged care, offices, conference center, logistical assistance, life support, and other modern green building healthy city facilities. The planning and design requirements included complete functional arrangement, reasonable layout, energy-saving, comfortable environment and reasonable process, etc., all of which to improve the hospital’s overall quality.

The hospital site is located in a horizontal line from east to west surrounded by linear structures in the densely packed residential area. Same as the surrounding buildings, the new hospital building consists of a series of linear horizontal structures but in different heights.

For our design, we return to the long-distance lines of the existing surrounding buildings for the starting point of the design. The shapes of surrounding buildings and construction in the yard is also similar. The idea is to split the land with a series of thin lines, in order to create spaces for new facilities and garden areas. So our design concept has been based on the idea of“turning the existing City into the new medical City”

Our design philosophy derived from the concept of "one city with four centers", this design will enable patients, visitors, employees to consider the hospital as their primary destination. Our challenge is how to create a logical and multifunctional medical city. All of the the buildings, including the medical center , health management center, training center, and elderly health care center are combined to be harmoniously integrated To meet the future operational demand,all of the necessary functions are contained together, including the main hospital campus, the main hospital clinic (and emergency center), Eye Hospital, Cancer Hospital, Out-Patient for medical examination and special outpatient rehabilitation, elderly health care centers (including living assistance and professional nursing) training center, conference center, apartments and infrastructure areas.

The new hospital must step away from the typical sense of pressure, discomfort and fear that is often brought on by traditional hospitals. This hospital will be an open and orderly hospital so that the patient feels as if they are staying at home.
