As a 1500 bed affiliated hospital of the acclaimed Sichuan Cancer Medical Center in central Chengdu, this new hospital extends their outreach mission outward farther toward the increasing populations in the residential and commercial areas of the new city district. The 265,000 m2 hospital is planned to be a comprehensive hospital but with the focus on oncology. Other components of the multi-phase program include research buildings, campus residential, commercial office, and a proton therapy facility which is also supported with a small hotel for visiting patients and their families.
The site is an L-shape set among some smaller hills running through the middle of the buildable area. The hospital functions were established in the garden areas of the northern half of the site, with the taller In-Patient towers closest to the north-east corner of the site so that they can be seen from the adjacent major north-south highway. The hospital entrance comes from the local road on the east side of the site and the hospital campus opens toward that direction. The research, commercial office, the proton therapy and the hotel are to the south-eastern segment of the site and are accessed from the main entry at the southern local road. The main site road connects the eastern and southern site entrances, but the organization of the functions keeps their traffic separate.
The unifying design organizational concept is drawn from the hills of the site. While small in size, the hills separate the site into south and north sides creating the primary axes leading to the main spatial components of the hospital.
Along the north edge of the site is the out-patient building with a series of angled shapes to mimic the angles of the hills and nearby meandering river. And to the west side of the site are the in-patient towers stacked on top of the D&T to provide for the vertical element for views of the site from a great distance.
