The Affiliated Peace Hospital of Changzhi Medical College was established in July 1, 1946 under its
previous name of Bethune International Peace Hospital General Hospital for the military in Hebei,
Shanxi, and Shandong provinces. The hospital is the largest in Changzhi, and has professional and
advanced equipment, strong technical capabilities, and, as such, is a large-scale 3A hospital that
integrates medical, teaching, scientific research, prevention, health care and rehabilitation functions.
The hospital has a medical coverage area that includes Shanxi, Henan and Hebei, but also additional regional locations that include a population of several tens of millions more. For the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the hospital, we were asked to design the exterior facade so as to improve the overall image of the hospital campus buildings and that they be built to align with the historical development of the campus, including the 1980’s pediatric building, comprehensive building, administrative building and the other medical masonry structure buildings, the outpatient surgical department (built within the last 15 years) , and Maternal and Child Care Service Center which is currently under construction. The design takes into consideration the overall master planning process and the necessary medical characteristics of each facility, the building types from different periods, and the use of the overall facade design to present a new image rooted in a historical style. In addition, the space includes preparing an interior design for the new Maternal and Child Care Service Center.

The project is located at No.110 Yan’an Road, Changzhi, Shanxi Province. During its historical development, a variety of different architectural styles were built. Some of these building are older and more complex, which in turn leads to a disordered hospital image. With the elevation renovation, it was necessary to integrate these different periods of architectural styles, various architecture structures and varying design characteristics. In the process of design, not only is the image problem solved, but also the functional problems associated with the elevations, such as covering the older buildings which have dozens of existing wall-mounted air-conditioners, hiding the numerous electrical cables, and also covering the rainwater downspouts and the , air conditioning drainage pipes.

The facade renovation design is rooted in deep historical appreciation of the Peace Hospital, by
combing through its development context, we extracted a design vocabulary with relevant historical
markers to reflect architecture’s history and heritage. At the same time, making it adapted to the
demands for construction of a modern hospital, the aesthetic appeal of the modern city, the deadline
requirements for the 70th anniversary development milestone , and by combining the historical heritage with modern design so as to create a new hospital building image.
