FLIGHT - A NEW CANTEEN ROOF FOR THE WAT NOM THO SCHOOL, CHAINAT

In the summer of 2022, 3rd-year students from INDA, the international BSc program of the Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University worked closely with the management of the Wat Nom Tho School, Chainat in the design and construction of a new steel roof for the school canteen to replace the aging and dilapidated timber structure/cement tile roof.
 
The design of the new roof evokes the spread wings of the heron in flight - an indigenous and familiar bird to the wetlands of Chainat province and envelops a light airy space that can be used for lunch, teaching, and parent club activities.  The bright colour of the roof recalls the rusty orange plumage of the majestic Goliath heron - and distinguishes the building within the school campus. The footprint and perimeter of the existing canteen have been retained, and students worked closely with the structural engineer to develop a braced steel roof structure that minimizes weight and distributes load evenly across the retained existing columns. Renovation and redecoration of the existing walls are to be completed by the school.

The roof project was sponsored by the Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University and NS BlueScope (Thailand) donated the new roof covering and TMT Steel provided new steel purlins.  Grateful thanks to the director and the assistant director (Khun Tussanee) of the Wat Nom Tho school.
