The Angsila Oyster Scaffolding Pavilion aims to raise awareness and appreciation of the historic but little-known coastal fishing industry in the village of Angsila, in Chonburi Province. The pavilion design draws on and “bastardizes” the traditional and widely deployed bamboo scaffolding used for oyster cultivation.
In use, local fishermen bring small groups of visitors from Angsila to the pavilion where they can select their own oysters and mussels, which are then prepared fresh for them to eat …a sea-to-table dining experience in a remarkable coastal setting. This new dining experience allows the Angsila fisherman to present their seafood directly to the customers in an entirely new and interactive way. Serving seafood directly on the scaffolding not only ensures seafood freshness for customers but allows the fishermen to bypass the market “middleman”, ensuring that all profits directly benefit the Angsila community.
When not utilized as a dining pavilion for visitors, the oyster scaffolding serves as a recreational fishing platform for the locals. On weekends, Angsila fishermen families arrive at the platform with traditional fishing poles, bait, and hook, to catch a variety of local fish, which are naturally drawn to the clean, shellfish-filtered, waters surrounding the oyster and mussel bundles.
