East Berlin Cemetery & Crematorium - Competition Entry

This student competition sponsored by the Stewardson Memorial Fellowship required applicants to design a cemetery complex on a vacant parcel in suburban Philadelphia. The complex was to comprise a cemetery, crematorium and mausoleum. My scheme was inspired by the Montgomery Rose greenhouse complex in my hometown, a vast structure that lay abandoned for decades. The scheme consists of a series of empty steel greenhouse frames, extending parallel to one another and blanketing the entire site. The three programmatic elements are inserted within this organizational framework. The mausoleum and crematorium consist of areas enclosed by wood slats, providing points of shelter and a sense of place. The cemetery plots are scattered throughout, with each plot consisting of an individual steel crane which supports the burial vessels, levetating them above the ground. With each new vessel added, the crane dips closer to the ground. The cranes themselves resemble either storks (a symbol of birth) or oil wells (a reflection on the industrial nature of the landscape surrounding the site.
