Coney Island Parachute Pavilion - Competition Entry

Sponsored by the Van Alen Institute, this competition sought design ideas for the public space immediately adjacent to Coney Island's historic Parachute Jump, the proclaimed "Eiffel Tower of Brooklyn". The program and budget of the competition were completely open-ended.

My entry proposed that the area be used for a new amusement attraction. The concept was inspired by an essay in Delirious New York, in which Rem Koolhaas postulated that Coney Island has always functioned in tandem with Manhattan, as an intensified and fantastical parallel universe of Manhattan urbanity. I proposed that the Parachute Pavilion be an amusement park bounce castle, filled with the dismembered appendages of retired Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons. The castle is enclosed by a minimal stainless steel and glass curtain wall, with cable-trussed glass roof to provide open views to the looming Parachute Jump tower above. The old wooden Riegelmann's boardwalk extends into the pavilion itself, allowing the lower-level waiting room to be an extension of the boardwalk itself. A mezzanine level overlooking the bounce castle provides views of the occupants and the beach beyond.
