Garden Tunnel @ Mondrian Hotel

This 80' long steel trellis structure serves as the entry passage to the hotel, taking guests from the sidewalk through the garden to the entry door. The structure consists of structural steel angle and CNC-fabricated steel plate assemblies with continuous lateral struts. Tensile cable infill allows ivy to climb up the entire system, creating an enclosed environment. CNC-formed acrylic panels line the top to shelter guests from weather. Key challenges included coordination with structural engineers to assess wind loads and dead loads, coordination with subcontractors to accomplish tight, multi-radius bends, complex rigging procedures, and the aesthetic challenge of detailing a structure in which 100% of the connections are exposed.
