Hunter College - West Building Plaza Rehabilitation

The city block long plaza fronting Lexington Avenue serves as the gateway to an outdoor gathering place for Hunter College's East 68th Street Campus. While being the campus' entry, urbanistically, the plaza is also a transportation crossroads between the MTA's 68th Street Subway Station entrance and two major bus stops. Decades of use and deferred maintenance have caused significant deterioration resulting in water infiltrating into interior spaces beneath the plaza. The comprehensive $3.6 million renovation & redesign includes monumentally scaled granite paving, a new barrier-free entry into the building, and addresses critical maintenance issues. The plaza's feature element is the redesigned subway entry that serves as a visual landmark for the campus and anchors the intersection while providing seating for the public.
