Scarsdale Barn Conversion (MICHAEL LEWIS ARCHITECTS PC PORTFOLIO)

Dating back nearly a century, the site of a former red, wood barn in Scarsdale fell into disrepair and was slated for demolition until the owner decided to rebuild it as a modern pool cabana. The design included a strong connection with the new, 50-foot infinity pool and associated Ipe decks. The landscape slopes steeply away from the pool and cabana, which strategically frames views of the forest below. The swimming pool was carefully sited to catch the maximum amount of sun on this heavily-wooded property. Although the interior space was limited by the former footprint of the existing barn, the cabana contains a spacious vaulted living room, along with a study, a full kitchen, and a luxurious bathroom. The structure opens toward the pool with rich wood decks that complement the stone patios, planters, and retaining walls. A series of benches, planters, an outdoor shower, and cable railings warmly envelope the deck.
