Chelsea Kunsthalle (COOPER UNION PORTFOLIO)

Program: two large galleries at 4500 ft2 and two small galleries at 1500 ft2, entry/lobby, shop/bookstore, collections library, educational classrooms, theater/auditorium, special event space, project room for visiting artists, café, and staff areas/offices.

Large scale works are brought into the basement loading dock below the High-Line.  Building systems are contained within the thickened floor plates of the central core, which can be partitioned off while exhibitions are being mounted.  Two entrances are set in shear to each other: one from the 10th Avenue frontage, one from the glass walkway extending from the Highline.  Alternating U-shaped floor plates pivot around the core, culminating in the top floor offices, wrapped along three sides of a roof terrace for private functions that faces the Hudson.
