Mohegan Sun Casino And Resort

The 600,000 square foot interior of Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Casino visually celebrates the history and traditions of the Mohegan (“Wolf People”) tribe through the use of wood and stone accentuated with faux animal skins, flowing brooks and ceremonial totems. The Rockwell Group designed the interior to resemble the understructure of a wigwam with ceilings rising to 75 feet at the building’s center. Each of the four entrances represents a season of the Mohegan Tribe’s traditional cycle and leads to a similarly-themed quadrant of the casino. Entertainment architect David Rockwell  took great care to learn about the Mohegan’s beliefs, rituals and daily way of living. MJM Studios worked closely with the Rockwell Group to translate their designs into three-dimensional reality, creating the trees–each from 16 to 35 feet high–found throughout the casino by combining real wood with simulated trunks. MJM technicians baked acrylic “leaves” in one of the company’s large kilns, then shipped them to the site. MJM also created and installed the casino floor “skin” band shells and ceiling murals, stenciled with Native American script and figures.
