Finalist Entry for the Lamborghini Monument Competition
Hosted by Young Architects Competitions
Speed, craft and technology are only a few of the characteristics one could use to describe the efforts employed by the Lamborghini brand. Beyond its established pedigree , it can be easy to overlook the moment when a tractor company started by Ferruccio Lamborghini began to produce vehicles that were a response to shortcomings in what was thought to be a tightly dominated market. To celebrate his defiance, these two interventions intend to blur the line between the birthplace and the product of his legacy.
Given that the image of a Lamborghini is widely known, these monuments are designed to be perceived as a three-dimensional silhouette formed by hung chains that are terminated along the surface of an absent car. The idea of blurring the relationship between the monument and its surroundings is reinforced through the use of perforated metal panels that are held together by a light steel frame which then dissolves into the visual accumulation of the material’s composition. Allowing the use of these dissolved materials will result in an affect that will distort one’s perception of the object’s static nature as they drive around it. As for the geometry of the floating mass above the silhouette, agency was taken to morph each of the six planes so as to exacerbate the distortion of the layered perforations.
Both monuments are intended to be of the same geometric composition while being expressed as two different finished materials. Roundabout 1 will be outfitted with weathered components that are meant to represent the more rural history of the brand, while Roundabout 2 will by specified with a powder coat finish representative of the polished and international brand that it is today and for the years to come.
