Unbuilt Design Entry for Warming Huts v2016
Designed to be a semi-permanent fixture, this proposal borrows a low-tech strategy from traditional Korean architecture - the ondol. Using the principal of directing heat from wood smoke through a masonry slab, the intent was to use a much thinner concrete structure made possible by concrete canvas which is not only fire resistant but would also allow for a variety of geometric configurations. By using a folded configuration, this proposal aims to capitalize on a geometric form that is not only structural but also allows for heat to travel from a large open wood burning heat source on one end to a more narrow smoke exhaust on the other. As for a final surface over the ondol structure, loose gravel is to be poured over so as to allow the heat to seep through and to also serve as a ballast for the slab. The shed will be composed of charred wood that will sit independently of the slab over wood framing that will be mechanically fastened to the given sled.
