This course seeks to explore the qualities of energetic behavior when it is manipulated to create atmospheric effects that can be use to design spaces. Thru this manipulation we seek to obtain the same properties that are looked for in any building (enclosure, privacy, isolation, comfort, etc.) but without the need of a particular material object.
Japan is famous for its Yokokocho, this are intimate alley ways which are filled with all kinds of activities from food to drinking or karaoke and so on. With the Olympics approaching there has been great debate about what to do with them, some seek to get rid of them and some seek to preserve them as a unique characteristic of Japanese urban life.
Our project engages the situation at multiple scales from large buildings to human scale as Tokyo is know for its square footage limitations. Because of the buildings location it is crucial to create a relation between city limit and suburbs as it engages the different cultures that converge there.
