The course started with the task of designing an extension for SCI-Arc in the existing 96,300 square foot parking lot. The extension should be projected in two phases, the first for school amenities and de second one for retail purposes. The theme of our studio was to create muted monolithic exteriors and interior worlds within the shell.
After various massing studies our team’s approach in achieving this was to create a stealthy exterior that blends in with its surrounding context and gives very little information about what happens in the interior so when you enter it you encounter a massive void, and object within another object, that works as the main articulation of the old SCI-Arc building and the new extension. This inner object works as the main space for social interaction as it connects every area of the program with spacious circulation areas.
