The building was originally designed in 1970 as a tabacco factory with offices; able to expand in all four directions. The concept therefore was that it consisted of modular open areas with a truss roof to facilitate all environmental control services.
In 2002 plans were drafted to renovate it to house the school of informatics and creative arts for the Dundalk Institute of Technology.
