Henning Larsen Architects, the international firm of the late Henning Larsen, was selected to build the new Citizen and Media Center in Stuttgart, Germany this past July. In collaboration with engineering firm Knippers Helbig, the new Center will be located in Stuttgart’s Castle Park and is described to be a distinctive entrance to the listed parliament building in Baden-Württemberg, which attracts over 65,000 visitors a year. On Aug. 11, the Illawarra Flame House of Team UOW Australia (University of Wollongong and TAFE Illawarra Institute) won the 2013 Solar Decathlon China. Co-hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Energy Administration China, the competition challenged university teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are affordable, energy-efficient, and stylish. The Timber in the City competition organized by ACSA, the Binational Softwood Lumber Council, and Parsons The New School for Design, attracted over 1,000 architecture students and young professionals to create proposals for a mid-rise, mixed-use complex addressing NYC housing needs. The winners were chosen by a panel of leading architects and professors based on the use of wood as the primary structural material while meeting the needs of the Brooklyn waterfront community. — acsa-arch.org

The bid to design an $81 million, 28-story residential tower on the site of Indianapolis' former Market Square Arena just went to RTKL (together with developer Flaherty & Collins Properties). The winning design was chosen by a panel of local government, real estate and community leaders and prevailed over five other competitors. — bustler.net

The New York-Netherlands team, WXY + West 8, was shortlisted to advance to the Analysis and Design stages for the "Rebuild by Design" competition on August 9. Premier Dennis Napthine announced HASSEL + Herzog & de Meuron as the winners of the state government's competition for the redesign of the iconic station, but the plan for the redevelopment itself has been met with a degree of skepticism from some. On top of the $1.6m spent on the competition, Napthine estimates that the realisation of the plans would cost $1 to $1.5b and would take over a decade to be built. "Glazed Software Factory" is the title of the winning competition entry for the new premises of a software company in the southern Germany city of Karlsruhe. Behnisch Architekten, in collaboration with Ayers Saint Gross, completed the John and Frances Angelos Law Center for the University of Baltimore this past April. The structure began construction in 2009 after the firm, which was developed under the leadership of Günter Behnisch's son Stefan, won first place in the university's international design competition back in 2008. — bustler.net

The Jury of Melbourne's Flinders Street Station competition was unanimous in the highly anticipated selection of the final winner: the beautiful vaulted roof-scape designed by Australian/Swiss team HASSELL + Herzog & de Meuron with London-based Purcell as heritage consultants.
