Following last week’s look at an open opportunity for an Architectural & Campus Planner at Payette, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore a role for an Intermediate Designer for the National Medal of Honor Museum at Rafael Viñoly Architects.
The role, situated in Arlington, Texas, asks for an architect with a minimum of five years' experience, preferably in the design and construction of museums.
Why the role interests us
We first reported on the National Medal of Honor Museum project back in 2019, when Viñoly was named as one of four firms shortlisted for the commission. One year later, in October 2020, we were given our first glimpse at Viñoly’s winning scheme, defined by a large mass of steel suspended on five pillars. Now, the firm’s latest search for construction site-based architects signals the next step in the project’s realization ahead of its 2024 completion date.
The scheme is therefore one of many projects whose journey has played out through our editorial coverage from inception to completion, offering readers a real-time insight into the highs and lows of delivering a complex project. This phenomenon was brought into sharp relief recently with OMA’s Taipei Performing Arts Center whose official opening we reported on last month; 13 years after our first coverage of the project.
Other examples closer to home include the ongoing Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, whose eight-year saga has so far seen the project’s site move from Chicago to Los Angeles, where it is currently under construction. Also in Los Angeles, the Zumthor-led makeover for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has finally reached its midway construction point, nine years after we first reported on the scheme.
To the successful candidate(s) for Viñoly’s latest opportunity, we hope the National Medal of Honor Museum's journey sees comparatively smoother sailing!
