As is frequently discussed on Archinect, the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the already-bourgeoning trend of companies offering remote working options to employees. In our recent survey of the architectural community’s plans to return to offices after the pandemic, only 29% of respondents said that their firm had required all staff to return to in-studio working. Architects are not the only profession likely to see long-term shifts in attitudes regarding office employment. In May of this year, USA Today reported on a survey which found that 30% of working professionals would quit their job if forced to return to the office after the pandemic.
The forced experiment in remote working witnessed by millions of people over the past 18 months may also have consequences far beyond the workplace. With the common link between personal identity and workplace occupation severed during the pandemic, many people began to reevaluate more fundamental aspects of their lives. This has seen findings such as a Pew Research study earlier this year, which noted that a full 66% of unemployed Americans were considering changing their line of work, or the 14–23 million Americans who separately expressed plans to relocate away from major cities, representing 7% to 11.5% of all U.S. households.
This ever-growing social transience, whether for work of living, was fueling new architectural typologies long before the pandemic, which are destined to experience a further boom in the years ahead. Companies such as Airbnb, WeWork, and Second Home have frequently made headlines in architectural media for their distinct approaches to briefs, space, and use requirements. These can range from WeWork’s recent plans for a post-pandemic return to Airbnb’s $1m fund to realize some of the world’s most unique home ideas to Second Home’s unveiling of their colorful Los Angeles campus by Selgascano.
This growing shift in working and living trends is bringing with it new opportunities for architects. Last week, as part of our ongoing jobs highlights series, we reported on the U.S.-based workplace provider Industrious, who are (still) seeking a Design Manager and Project Manager to help maintain and grow their portfolio of 100 co-working spaces in over 50 U.S. cities. This week, we are switching our focus to Soho House, the well-known operator of members’ clubs, restaurants, hotels, and cinemas across the U.S., Europe, and Asia, catering to those in film, media, fashion, and creative industries.
The London-born initiative is currently hiring several positions over on Archinect Jobs across New York City and Los Angeles. In New York City, the company is seeking a Senior Architect, Mid-Level Architect, and Mid-Level Interior Designer, while in Los Angeles, they are looking for a Mid-Level Architect, Senior Interior Designer, and Mid-Level Interior Designer. Responsibilities across the architecture roles include fulfilling projects from conception through specification and construction, and support the company’s expansion across the UK, U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia. All positions are full-time with a requirement to travel.
Since its founding in 1995, the company has articulated an architectural style defined by adaptively reusing old buildings with a contemporary, casual flare familiar to many co-working and co-living providers. These include a Georgian House in London’s Soho, which inspired the company’s name, a Grade II-protected Georgian manor in rural England, and a former warehouse in New York’s Meatpacking District. Noteworthy adaptions to some of the company’s 27 properties include rooftop pools in London and New York, and a Cowshed spa on the grounds of their rural English manor.
