After wrangling over the future of California’s high-speed rail, state lawmakers plan to release a critical batch of money to finish a bullet train in the Central Valley while also establishing an inspector general to audit the beleaguered project and authorizing billions of dollars in new money for rail plans across the state. — The Mercury News
Following a sizable $97.5 billion state budget surplus, California lawmakers last week agreed to allocate $4.2 billion in bond funds needed to finish the ambitious high-speed rail project's 171-mile Central Valley portion which is expected to connect Bakersfield with Merced by 2030, according to current estimates.

ohh hell yeah...
only a handful of people prefer waiting for the train than having their freedom of driving directly lol
Eh, different strokes for different folks. Driving comes with its own set of restrictions -- it's a Day-1 depreciating asset in need of constant attention in terms of cost of fuel, annual inspections, license fees, insurance, parking, maintenance/upkeep, stress of ownership/driving, limitations in urban centers, space, traffic, etc. There's something to be said for the ease and freedom of not being attached/responsible for a mobile hunk of metal, and just getting on/off a mode of transport and not giving a second thought about it ever again.
it's a shame they haven't implemented obama's high-speed bus plan

That story from ONN is required viewing. The savings would be substantial.
.
"The train eventually would travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles in 2 hours, 40 minutes."
From a different article.
I'd pay a decent sum to avoid both airports and I-Fucking-5 for sure.
Plus, I do no think checking into rail lines will be as onerous as flying.
usually the costs of new technology goes down with standardization. But like education, health and construction -- contractors will just wait out the Federal Government to print more money to pump up the bloat.
