For the latest Studio Snapshot, Archinect spoke with Casper Mork-Ulnes, Founder and Principal of San Francisco and Oslo-based firm Mork-Ulnes Architects. citizen and Noah Walker both liked what they saw "That's some very nice work" aka "Wonderful projects."
Plus, when Paul thanked the Archinect community, citizen spoke for many/all of us ‘Nectors "I often visit the forum to blow off nervous energy via lame quips and dorky humor. But I very much appreciate this place and the people who work hard to keep it stocked, up, and running."
Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) became the second Architects Declare co-founder to leave the advocacy group, following Foster + Partners' withdrawal. One hot take - "IMO this makes Architects Declare all the MORE significant. It's upsetting the old guard, and that's good!"
Urbanize Los Angeles reported that the updated design(s) from Gehry Partners, LLP for 8150 Sunset, are the result of conditions of approval imposed by LA's City Council in 2016. Will Galloway was disappointed "looks like they asked FOG to cut all of the architecture and joy out."
The November 2020 ABI showed "billings declined for the ninth consecutive month" but the good news is signs also "indicate that client interest in new projects
has started to wane after more encouraging signs last month."
Sean Joyner kicked off the Archinect 2020 year in review.
R.I.P Luigi Snozzi, considered the leader of the so-called new Ticino school of architecture, at 88.
Interpretation Centre of Romanesque in Lousada, Portugal by spaceworkers and La Bella Vita in Taichung, Taiwan by Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel are just two of the latest top images (in no particular order) found on the Archinect Pinterest board Glass.
Atelier RZLBD shared more from their ‘Lost Cities’ series.
Both Eric Knight and Juste Tresor started new blogs.
The former, Empirical Architecture, will be focused on a "Quantifiable holistic approach for improving health and performance of the built environment...common sense and practical solutions that can improve our living ecosystem." While Juste’s first post over at untapped highlighted "readily available technologies that will propel the architect’s role in newer territories."
If you are a junior (2-5 years experience), interior designer looking for work, consider applying to either; Chelsea Design Group out of Century City/Westwood or urban in the NYC metro.
Or for something more academic, perhaps an Assistant Professorship at University of Houston or Wayne State University?
When North Dakota State University announced its newest school, The School of Design, Architecture, and Art (SODAA). NDSU combined its architecture, landscape architecture, and visual arts departments into one school, b3tadine[sutures] didn’t buy the hype .
"sounds like marketing speak from a university that's going to struggle garnering new students. It reminds me of my alma mater, NJIT, that did that same shit. Disruption would be universities like University of Minnesota giving up on their boondoggle of 4+2, putting poorer graduates further behind when they graduate."
Bench had questions for MM/Wood Guy et al., about Passivehaus Certification. Specifically, is it worth trying to convince higher-ups to cover PH certification over LEED?
Wood Guy granted that "LEED is...well-known and more comprehensive, but in my world it's not highly respected" and goes on to suggest PHIUS over the original. Whistler argues might not be worth spending money on the cert as you can always "hire someone to run the program / numbers" but acknowledged the initial training/cert develops a "deeper knowledge base" and "Once you aware of the design strategies then it's quite straight forward to design accordingly."
apscoradiales offered up a 20+ point list in response to atelier nobody’s thread, inspired by the question "how a truly terrible design idea like vertical blinds ever got so popular"? Yet mightyaa came to their defense "No other type of fully operable blind can be fitted to a sloped head...like the window groupings below where they can be cut to fit oddball heads, even round, parabolic, etc. They have their place". Later midlander detailed at least 3 elevator associated complaints.
Finally, so it goes revived the Shitty Architecture Men thread.
"The trouble is that men still hold the majority of leadership positions at firms - we know that for a fact. If you are a man, you are likely blind to these subtle acts of sexism. Just because you don't notice it, doesn't mean it isn't happening all around you."
On a related note Koww wanted to know "what happened to the spreadsheet?...hmmm. i have a copy of it but was wondering if it's still being updated"?
