Los Angeles-based pair and married couple Johnston Marklee, who are heading up this year's Chicago Architecture Biennial with a theme of "make new history," are included alongside relative youngster Bjarke Ingels of BIG, who champions his self-described "hedonistic sustainability."

Why is this "new leadership" adding "new depth"? The article doesn't say. That may require a conversation the NYT doesn't have the authority or insight to answer. It's amusing that none of these architects have ever been covered in depth during the current Times architecture blackout. Now there's a Biennale to do the lifting, so...
The NYT is only interested in big conferences, heavy handed politics or big urbanism, or culture as a means to enforce or construct narratives, not in art or design that transcends or pierces them.
The "new leadership" is the new cocktail party crowd. Little or nothing to do with most of us practioners.
Architecture has gone the way of everything else, all style and no substance.
