Newport Street Gallery by Caruso St John wins 2016 Stirling Prize
In RIBA's most anticipated announcement, the coveted Stirling Prize went to Damien Hirst's Newport Street Gallery. Designed by Caruso St John, the gallery won over contenders like WilkinsonEyre's recently revamped Weston Library at Oxford and the Outhouse by Loyn & Co Architects. In recent years, the Prize has sparked heated debate on London's social housing problem.
2016 Stephen Lawrence Prize awarded to House of Trace
RIBA also revealed Tsuruta Architects as the 2016 winner of the Stephen Lawrence Prize, which recognizes stellar projects built with small budgets. Built as an extension, the House of Trace was designed with “a sense of everyday memory” while fusing Japanese and British culture.
Rainforest Solutions Project wins the 2016 Fuller Challenge
The Rainforest Solutions Project developed a policy framework to sustainably manage British Columbia's treasured Great Bear Rainforest, while negotiating the conflicting interests of multiple groups. The Challenge review committee called the project an “extraordinary [victory for] conservation, social justice, and indigenous rights”.
2017 RIBA Royal Gold Medal awarded to Paulo Mendes da Rocha
Deemed as Brazil's most celebrated architect, Paulo Mendes da Rocha is winning lifetime achievement awards around the world this year. da Rocha was named the 2017 Royal Gold Medalist, joining previous recipients like Sheila O'Donnell + John Tuomey, Zaha Hadid, Oscar Niemeyer, and more.
2016 Aga Khan Award for Architecture winners announced
Established in 1977 by the Aga Khan, the triennial prize recognizes outstanding architectural projects considered to have successfully addressed the needs and aspirations of its surroundings communities — particularly where Muslims have a significant presence.
“Renaixement” from Burning Man 2016 pays tribute to its fiery cultural roots
Get a closer look at “Renaixement”, a special public art installation exhibited at this year's Burning Man. A team led by artists Miguel Arraiz and David Moreno of pink intruder designed the latticed golden cube, which incorporates traditional elements from the Fallas festival in Valencia, Spain.
2016 ACSA/AISC Steel Design Student winners
During the yearly ACSA/AISC Steel Student Design Competition, students across North America get to flex their skills in inventive structural steel designs. Students participate in the Tall Building category or the more customized Open category.
