“The one thing that everybody's sort of excited about is this idea that the stadium is designed as much for the tailgating, the pre-game, as for the game itself,” Ingels says in the 60 Minutes promo. — CityLab.com
When sports fans think football, they think...moats? Although the proposed stadium for the still-offensively-named Washington Redskins hasn't officially found a site, team owner Dan Snyder is pushing for it to be located next to the Anacostia River, which would provide context for Ingels' moat, although this juxtaposition still leaves the purple moon unexplained.

This design needs something.... maybe a miniature train around the moat.
When many years ago I saw Rem speak, one of the points he made in this lecture was that you never throw away an idea, and then proceeded to describe the origins of the Porto Opera House. Clearly Bjarke learned this lesson, given that the 1st rendering doesn't reflect the trees in the region, let alone the fact that Alexandria should be in background instead of trees.
We always complain that there must be a way to make architecture more profitable, and recycling an idea is clear a way to do it, but either be more calculated in how you present the recycled idea or be honest.
Btw, this is not the Anacostia, this is on the Potomac, "on top of" Oxon Hill Farm, a NPS Historic District.
What exactly is the recycled part of this? Not following...
When I saw this design, I thought it was one of the stronger BIG renderings--orange translucent biomorphic forms, and the general site treatment. Cool. Not as urban as I thought it would be.
But that moat....Im starting to wonder if BIG cares if any of these designs are built. The moat feels like a "jumping the shark" moment for BIG. It seems like we see new renderings every day, and then they fizzle out more like an advertising campaign than architecture project. The gimmicks really hurt their message. Worse, they seem designed to take the design fee and make their clients look stupid and elitist for the sake of their own marketing machine--not that the mostly conservative organizations don't deserve it.
Isn't the water element part of a strategy to make this more of a multi-use public space for a variety of events year-long?
The moat is a great idea and gives many potential name change options to relieve the franchise of its racist teamname. I suggest the Feudal Lords. The Feudal Lords are going Medieval on the Cowboys this afternoon!
"Let's go drive out to use the dirty ass vomit Redskins lagoon" said 0 people in the future.
Sorry folks, it's just a gimmick. Nothing to see here.
DC can't maintain a subway, how will they maintain a giant moat.
DC wouldn't maintain this. It's in Maryland.
With respect to recycling, there's little to suggest that the project was originally intended for this region by looking at the renderings. The only image that does located it, renders the ground as black, because it's not flat enough to justify the moat. It just seems more like a project that never moved forward, being brought back to life for this occasion.
If the Maryland site is that much different, not sure if the giant crater around the stadium will work.

just saying....
I find it strange that so many of these arch. critics think that drinking alcohol is somehow incompatible with being near bodies of water. Do these people ever get out of the house?
Yes davvid, alcohol and water never happen.
This is the "currently" proposed location.
To the left is Alexandria, and across the Woodrow Wilson Bridge that patch of green is the site.
