Museum of the History of Polish Jews wins first Finlandia Prize
Winning the first Finlandia Prize for Architecture is the latest achievement for the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw, designed by Finnish firm Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects. The prize is given to a Finnish architect or firm for a design or renovation of an outstanding new building completed within the past three years.
The House of Mirrors reinvents the Australian beach hut with a hint of mirror magic
The award-winning House of Mirrors by London and Melbourne-based design studio NEON was recently displayed at the Sculpture by the Sea Bondi 2014. Up close, the sculpture engages passersby as its steel frame draws them right to its mirrory middle, which appears to float inside as it reflects its coastal surroundings.
Point Supreme’s “Serpantina” from Urban Shade competition to be built in Habanim Garden, Israel
For the Habanim Garden site in the Urban Shade competition, Athens-based practice Point Supreme Architects won first place with their proposal, "Serpantina". The international competition was created in an effort to rethink the significance and role of shading in hot-climate regions like Israel.
MoMA concludes “Uneven Growth” workshops, case studies to be exhibited this month
To address the issue of disproportional urban development, MoMA selected six interdisciplinary teams to design proposals that investigate new architectural possibilities for six metropolises. After completing a series of workshops for 14 months, each team's case study will finally be exhibited starting this weekend. (Above: LAGOS by NLÉ + Zoohaus/Inteligencias Colectivas)
MoMA PS1 announces YAP 2015 finalists
Five finalists were chosen for MoMA PS1's popular Young Architects Program 2015. The finalist teams will now work on their proposals for a temporary outdoor urban installation for the MoMA PS1 courtyard's summer festivities.
BIG to design public square in Battersea Power Station redevelopment
The Architects' Journal reported that BIG will design the public square in the £8 billion redevelopment of the historic Battersea Power Station in London, but a formal announcement is yet to be made. BIG will join the project alongside big firms like Rafael Viñoly, Gehry Partners, and Foster + Partners.
Asia Pacific regional winners of Holcim Awards 2014
The announcement of the Asia Pacific winners marks the conclusion of the Holcim Awards 2014 regional competition. Winning a total cash prize of US$330,000, 13 projects from nine countries throughout the Asian content and Pacific region were awarded in a ceremony in Jakarta. BIG plans are revealed for Smithsonian Castle upgrade in D.C.
Bjarke Ingels Group recently unveiled the proposed master plan to renovate the historic Smithsonian Castle South Mall campus in Washington D.C. The 10-to-20-year plan includes expanding facilities, improving connectivity, and replacing old building mechanical systems.
