2005 - Babadag, Romania

BABADAG, Romania — The opening ceremony for ROMEX 05 — the largest bi-lateral exercise to date designed to train U.S. and Romanian militaries to work as cohesive multi-national forces — to place here July 19.

The ceremony officially marked the merger of Romanian and U.S. Soldiers into combined platoons for training.

Army Brig. Gen. Michael Tucker, assistant division commander for support, 1st Armored Division, addressed the audience.

"ROMEX 05 provides an opportunity for the U.S. and Romania to train their armies as NATO allies and expand their training perspectives into a multi-national realm," Tucker said.

About 1,800 U.S. and Romanian soldiers are participating in ROMEX 05, developing interoperability in tactical training such as military operations in urban terrain, small arms training, convoy operations, and situational and live fire exercises.

Soldiers are also participating in community development projects and plan to assist with the clean-up effort in areas of Romania recently devastated by floods.

ROMEX 05 continues through Aug. 2, with an official closing ceremony marking its conclusion.
