The duplex apartment is located in the heart of the West Village neighborhood in New York. Due to its prime location within walking distance to the Hudson River and nearby local shopping streets, clients wanted to renovate the existing apartment rather than moving to a new neighborhood. Two studio apartments were combined vertically, keeping the existing floor plans of a studio apartment on each floor. Living- Dining room and kitchen were on the upper level; bedroom, bathroom and walk-in closet were on the lower floor.
The client’s brief was to modernize and upgrade the duplex apartment and re-envision the floor plan. It was important to plan a new internal staircase. Since the building is a Co-op building expanding or moving wet location was not possible. Modifying the slab opening for the stair case was not possible.
Within the existing constraints of the building and the apartment, Haute Architecture planned an open floor plan with a minimal design.
