I read 4 pages in Spanish without looking up a single word! Now I'm working on my listening skills. I purposely sat next to 3 women from Columbia at the airport to see if I could understand them. Not entirely, but I have only been studying spanish only 2 months, sometimes for up to 6 hours a day. I feel smart (for once). What an enriching experience!
Ms. Beary, pleaseprettyplease keep posting here even though you're not "doing" architecture any more - it pleases and warms my heart so much to hear how happy you are after the trauma of your last job!
That's fantastic to hear Beary. Tuning your ear to a foreign language can be a challenge sometimes. I'm glad to hear you're having success. I'm incredibly envious of the reading comprehension. Keep up the good work, you'll totally get there. Pretty soon, you'll be piping in on those conversations and adding your own thoughts. YAY!!!
Oh... and what Donna said. It totally warms my heart to hear things are going so well for you in your new career.
Unicorn is going to be awfully disappointed when he realises he hasn't been banned. Sarah like you, I haven't ventured off Thread Central much lately - when I do, I become a little disappointed at much of the doom, gloom and archinect classroom that seem to pass off as threads.
got my first climate change denier comment on my blog today... Maybe I should go back to blogging about landscapes and not the climate, but what fun would that be.
OK, I didn't see anything offensive, can someone just give me the Cliff's Notes version? I am assuming it's not the one about Happy Valley...
Also, hellooooo everyone! I am a little stressed out, and I have a slightly unhealthy crush on a coworker. Nevertheless I am going for a new personal record of 5 happy hours in 5 days, and I am drunk right now. Happy Wednesday!
toast I wish I never saw that video. It made my knees shake. I know I know an architect who's afraid of heights. Funny watching the video I just wanted to jump off
That video was amazing but honestly it didn't so anything to me. Maybe it's because I've had so many freak out moments in planes, I kind of just felt like I was in a plane looking around. I love how the narrator mentions OSHA. For real though, I hope those guys get paid LOTS of money. God bless them.
I've been way too intimidated to post in this thread. It feels like butting in on an inside joke told by a small group of people who may throw a chicken at you for giggles and shits.
I do have to ask what did ya'll do to poor unicorn. Right now he's in a south Florida parking lot of a 7-11 turning tricks for cigarettes. That's no way to treat a contributor to architectural discussions. Crazy or not. Discourse in our field (compared to other professions) is surprisingly poor. Archinect gets dozens of post contributions a day. Pretty sad given noone else does better.
toaster's video of tower climb made me throw up and poop myself at the same time. One of Taoist random rules to happy existence is 'live close to the ground'. That one resonates more the older I get. No issues with flying though. It makes sense transportation-wise. Living or working on 105th floor does not.
we don't know what happened to unicorn, steelstuds. for some reason he decided to start a new thread and post nsfw/bizarro-world video in order to intentionally get banned.
thread's gone, i'm not sure if he's still among us or not, and we don't know what he was up to.
I'm sure he'll be back. Outside world is too scary for some of us.
btw, does anyone know anything about the new version of archinect? Was there ever a request for improvement ideas issued? I can't see how one can improve upon the concept of manually entering html codes for posts though. :)
A big tech site (digg.com) recently went to version 4. After only a few weeks of the new design, they managed to lose 70% of the regular visitors. Impressive indeed.
steel, did Digg really loose that many users? Although to be honest i the couple of times i have used since redesign i wasn't thrilled mainly with the choices for categorization over anything,.
And to be additionally honest my biggest worry about Archinect's new version is that it will replace/clutter up the simple/minimal design, color scheme etc of Archinect with all sorts of Web 2.0 + features graphics and doodads.
But anywho, yeah unicorn was doing very well here for awhile. I thought he made some great contributions/threads lately. And then he decided to go all weird Japanese porno video on us
the whole unicorn thing is bizarre... i called him out for some stuff on his UCF thread that he never responded to... i can't imagine that that was the impetus for his going down in a blaze of glory though (cue the bon jovi!)... whatever... i will miss the bizarre pomo threads though...
thanks for taking a look at the feature. i'm still hoping to push some discussion in the comments section...thanks to Orhan and Nam for their responses. i've actually received a few random emails about the feature (including one from a guy in rural canada that looked me up via google to get my email address). Derek (the primary contributor) received a phone call in response to the feature, from someone involved with property rights or something. anyway, treekiller and Steven (and anyone else that teaches -- techno, Donna once you have some time on your hands :)...I'd love to know your reactions to the pedagogical goals that Derek advocates for.
and just so my only contribution isn't a plug for the feature, here is a totallySFW picture of a tree from Freedom Park in Charlotte, NC:
morning tc, today I'm geeking out to streetfilms.org (warning - time suck alert), instead of creating the syllabus for my new spring course.
the big announcement won't happen til after sept 29th, if it's going to happen - the U moves that slowly - cogs within gears within cogs within gears...
steelstuds... nice name simultaneously architectural and sadomasochist. Welcome indeed. You'll find that Thread Central in quite addictive and there's typically 5 conversations at any one point. Speaking of which...
does anyone have October's copy of Dwell? Well a certain archinecteur has a letter to editor published in it. (steelstuds what do you call someone how checks in daily to archinect?) And then to sweeten today I found out that I may be going to Puerto Rico to present at a sustainability conference. Fun
I have my first substitute job this afternoon. The teacher is a special ed teacher, but it seems he may also be a track coach. His notes said something about having the girls track team do their assignments on the track. I'm a bit nervous, but it's at the school that will have the Architecture teacher opening next school year. I'm doing my best just to get face time because I want that job!
You know you have been around awhile when you have to pull a project off an old 100 mb zipdrive disk. It happened to me today, and well the outcome has been nothing but frustrating. Seems like the disk did some damage to my external zip disk reader. No let me make two external zip disk readers, and one internal zip disk reader. So I have spent a good part of the day looking for something on the internet which is free for resolving my issue, but to no avail.
This is something which pisses me off to no end! I'm looking at the Fuji zip disk and well it it waranteed for life...but ....but.... can they compensate me for all the time I spent producing the information stored on that disk. I doubt it, most likely they will send me a check for a buck or two.
The moral of the story is always update your files to the latest and greatest media format or get SCREWED! THAT IS OLD SCHOOL THINKING.
OH...YA...i WOULD LIKE TO GET THAT LITTLE BUGGER AT iomega (ZIP DRIVE) AND GIVE HIM AN OLE TIME THRASHING! Cause they want me to pay them for figuring out why their equipment went into the pooper..
Thread Central
warning: tops are addiction!

I'm feeling FaSciNaTiOn with this early prototype of the Heidleburg Project...

sarah, took a moment to realize that I was the axe... clever. at least I'm not missing my nose.
funny, i always envisioned TK as an elm bark beetle instead of an axe...

Orhan, that is totally me. I love those damn chickens.
<a href "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uccjrp5NRYE">watch this</a> full screen.
warning - it is the point of view of someone free-climbing a 1768 foot gided tower. nothing bad happens, but it's difficult to watch...
got my first climate change denier comment on my blog today... Maybe I should go back to blogging about landscapes and not the climate, but what fun would that be.
Sarah that is the cutest sketch ever! Thank you for my DJ tables! I love it! Nice work :o)
OK, y'all, what did I miss? I am assuming whatever offensive thread was started has been taken down? I will go look...
barry, how much longer do we have to wait for that big announcement? can the university possibly move any slower?
OK, I didn't see anything offensive, can someone just give me the Cliff's Notes version? I am assuming it's not the one about Happy Valley...

Time to go watch some Netflix...
It's gone, DubK. Good riddance, too, it was ick.

bah, digg was gamed by conservative tools of the anti-science koch brothers, anyway...
http://blogs.alternet.org/oleoleolson/2010/08/05/massive-censorship-of-digg-uncovered/
archi - don't say I didn't warn you.
now I want to see it in iMax...
definite respect for those workers...
btw - sarah - nice illustration - I like that the toaster is jumping...
hey all,

AP, I'll get back to you.
steelstuds, welcome to this thread! Everyone is welcome here, it's not a closed back room.
Besides your screen name is super easy to draw so next time Sarah does a cartoon you'll be well represented.
tree did i miss something about the big announcement? Does it relate to your or something else?
steelstuds... nice name simultaneously architectural and sadomasochist. Welcome indeed. You'll find that Thread Central in quite addictive and there's typically 5 conversations at any one point. Speaking of which...

HI steelstuds!
To be honest with you, I don't even think Unicorn Ghost is a real person. I feel like it may have been puddles reincarnate. I don't know.
Also, holz that link is UNBELIEVABLE. I can't believe that group gamed Digg for that hard and that long. Ridiculous.
Futhermore:
1) I am drunk.
2) I passed PPP.
Hooray. Time for bed.
hurray!
Hurray!!!
You rock, DubK. now schedule the next one ASAP so you keep riding this optimistic high!

SARAH let us know how it went!!
Yes, Slart that was my first. I'm sending positive energy your way. Um, where do you live again so I can direct it appropriately? LOL
