okay, finally got a hold of someone at SCIArc - she said they're mailing out stuff this week. Now since other people have heard from SCIArc, does that mean this is the reject mail-out? Or do they not send everything out at the same time, just trickling things out... She did not tell me my status - which I over-analyzed and ultimately think this must mean I did not get in...
mab82-
not necessarily. last year, people heard (both positive, negative, and waitlist) at different times. from what i've heard, they are sort of disorganized. also, most schools stick to a policy of not telling people over the phone, unless it is the school that calls the student. i think this might be for privacy. good luck!
thanks wilday - just read elsewhere that someone called last year and they just told him over the phone, otherwise I wouldn't think much of it (as I know very well other schools are reluctant to tell over the phone). However, that was last year and policies could change...? I just want to hear/read - you're an amazing applicant - here's free tuition! Yay.
GT+...:( i know there are around 48 spots at UF. I heard that around 60 of the undergrad from UF applied, and about 150- 200 usually apply to the school. you should get your letter soon. best of luck =)
Rejected from Columbia; 0 for 3 for the season. Congrats to everyone else, hope you enjoy yourself; now I have to design/build myself a hole in the ground and jump in.
GT oops sorry i am talking about grad school. The undergrad program takes 96 there are only a few people that dont make it I think it was only like 20-30 when i applied 2 years ago. Show process and they don't like anything that is too realistic (no houses or anything like that) =) good luck!
I wanna hear about some of the more unexpected accept/reject scenarios like Puffed mentioned -- it gives hope to all b/c it shows how strange and somewhat arbitrary the thinking of admissions committees can be at various schools:
e.g.
Puffed: Rejected: UW / Accepted: Penn
I know someone else mentioned they got MIT but not somewhere else random...
Any others? I know it's totally subjective, and that such a comparison implies a ranking of schools, but who cares. We're just killing time 'til the last envelopes trickle in...Who has the biggest contrast in their minds?
anyone experienced crits? did you ever feel like a lot of comments are random, arbitrary, or just plain full of bs? well, the admission process is just one looong crit.... same people, same bs
its weird too, i got in everywhere else and got admitted early too...but these bastards.
but like a professor once said to me. if you tried your best and poured your heart and soul into the process and they dont take you, then you two werent meant to be. and in a lot of ways its true. my brother works in admissions at the university of chicago med school and they told him they admit based on kids they think "will fit in with the kind fo students they want at their school"
and i think that is the general mindset...so why force and wish to go somewhere that really doesnt want you for you after you give your heart and passions to.... you knwo what i mean, guys?
Has anyone been rejected or e-jected from UCLA? I have heard nothing either way and I don't seem to recall anyone posting their rejection notification. I have a huge issue with this rolling acceptance trend. I guess it wouldn't be half as bad if I weren't scouring this thread daily. Then I wouldn't have known at all about the apparance of the first round of acceptances.
strugs,
no idea about the open house dude.. i just wrote cindy sousa an email about that + the lack of scholarship info (where's my $6,000 from last year???), i'll let you know. i just noticed i was waived the summer program. word.
Can someone explain financial aid to me? I am clueless. I paid for my last degree through scholarships and jobs, so this whole full-time ridiculously expensive schoolin' w/ grants and loans and subsidized loans and unsubsidized loans and scholarships and work study and blood drives and scratch-offs is new territory for me....
So:
I get that a scholarship is good. I got one of those from one school, but with less loan money, and a lot of unsubsidized loans...
One school gave me a full array of loans and work study, but no scholarships...
I can't find mention of grants anywhere...
Two schools--UCLA and GSAPP--have not said anything to me about $$. I do not think that is a positive sign.
...I am aware that I am not +q, so I get that I won't get a lot of merit-based stuff...
but, a financial aid package that is all loans is not really a good thing, eh? I mean, those are purely need-based these days, right? They aren't going to give a mediocre talent and poor kid less loans, right?
do grants just appear, or do you have to apply for them?
Any good sources for outside scholarships that people are willing to share?
Damn...once the initial fun of the envelope hunting is over, this whole process gets really scary all over again....
i am in the same position as you... got a huge scholarship from one school, and heard nothing about a scholarship from ucla and gsapp. i called admissions at ucla who said that the scholarships were merit -based. at the end of their first year, the students pin up their stuff and get merit based scholarships for the next year, which isn't a lot because they have only about 15K available, due to the lack of funding from the state. throughout undergrad, the grants just appeared as a negative amount on my bill.
you can always crank out competition work over the summer and hope to WIN the money. there's always the lottery...
I know that some schools like U Cincy, GaTech, and others (not sure of who) do coop programs where you work for a local Arch. firm part time and they pay your tuition and give you a stipend. That is what I am betting on since my number one school isnt giving me any scholarships. You may want to see if something like that is available. Good Luck.
just wondering if I could get a run-down of those of you choosing UPenn - both MArch II and I and if you're planning to attend the open house on April 10

*repsonding to a post from yesterday re UT Austin*
STL - i did summer academy at UT last summer and it was good overall (i have no background in arch/art/design) it was a good experience for me to see what arch school would be like (although a very skewed experience) but i would not recommend it if you have an undergrad in arch. there was a student there with that situation and she left b/c it was all redundant for her. 2/3 of the students are high schoolers and then there is the "mature" studio - which is full of college students or post-grads. it was a very eye-opening experience for me but for me it was about deciding whether or not to apply to grad school, whether or not to spend thousands of dollars and 4 years of my life in this field. i decided yes.
that said - i'll be at UT in the fall so i'll see you there! i visited yesterday actually, saw some classes, talked to students, etc. and many of my summer academy instructors are still students there and some will be teaching again. all nice people.

grants, tuition waivers, scholarships = free money to support your educational goals. tuition waivers are best b/c you don't have to claim them as income for tax purposes (not that anyone actually worries about this). you can apply for additional grants that are available through your school, the aia, the concrete and steel industry (no joke), various arts councils....really there are tons. you do have to find them.
as far as federal loans - subsidized - does not accrue interest while you are in school where, obviously, unsubsidized does. federal loans are at a very low interest rate, about 4%, so should be your first consideration. your fafsa determines how much you are eligible to borrow up to $18,500 combined per year. If you have to pay for summer, this amount gets spread out over three semester, which can suck.
alternative loans cover whatever you can't and you may need a co-signer in some circumstances. alternative loans vary in interest rate and may be around 8%. take these out only as a last resort. take these out only as a last resort. take these out only as a last resort. interest accrues while you are in school and after three years a $10,000 loan will be about $13,000 when you BEGIN to pay it back. remember, architects don't make a lot of money. in my own naivete, i took out a student loan, which is now eloquently referred to as "that bitch".
most schools have ta positions, grad assistantships or work study. each school varies on how available these are. my advice, quickly learn the trade of bartending, again, no joke. hours are flexible and you can make a pile of money in a few hours a week. this is cash that no one needs to know about (IRS) and it's better to pay for things with cash upfront than to believe you can put academia on credit and somehow pay it all back in the future. besides, the opportunity to start a lovely glasswares collection is too good to pass up.
i don't think anyone has heard from rice other than one person who said they stopped by b/c they live in houston and they found out they were accepted...
also - i did get my official "no thank you" from penn and found some humor that the letter came from someone named "hacks"
Yeah, I am definitely eligible for the full 18,500 in loans. Sure wish someone would throw some grants in there....seriously, I would really go anywhere that offered a better financial aid package than what I've received so far...I almost wish I had applied to a few more of the generous schools now...ugh....
I just may have to dust off the ol' bartendings skills...it's been a while since I've done it, but if I recall, I used to have a pretty good time doing it...at least from the nights I can regall through the booze-fueled haze.
So far, Parson has given me the best offer financially, but the cost of living in NYC would wipe that out pretty quickly. The whole Cali residency thing makes UCLA sound a lot more appealing. Ahhhh. I was hoping this decision wasn't going to require soul-searching. I just wanted a clear front-runner.
I hear ya strugs, going through the same financial dilemma - of course still have to hear from SCIArc before I make any decisions... (damn you SCIArc - GET ON THE BALL)
Strugs, the same thing happened for me at RISD. All of their loans only totaled 21K (a $1700 work study, which doesn't even make a dent!). That would mean about 29K of personal loans! Yikes!
I haven't heard financials from any other schools yet.
Auguste Perret, don't feel bad about being 0 for 3. I was 0 for 5 last year and did a lot better this year (3 for 3). It could be worse! :-)
The thing about accepting to a school and declining later on - does that keep someone from the waitlist from getting in, or do they still accept from the waitlist after this happens?
ok i just got an acceptance to Tulane with a big scholarship that i didn't apply for...hmmm i still think i'll go to UT Austin but this is a twist i didn't expect...
Thanks for the info! I've been waiting for texas type to roll in. I can't wait for summer academy; i have a BS in Math and a "associates" in nuclear power - nothing that will help me with the drawing piece. I'll be in austin next month and will hopefully meet Mr. Speck again. I'll see you there! Thanks again.
I am waitlisted at penn for the m.arch 1 program.
I recieved an invitation yesterday to their open house and I am thinking about attending. I live in San Fran so it's a bit of a trip, but I figure if I get in, I will be able to make a good/better/more informed decision. I have only been accepted to ucla and waitlisted at yale. Does going to the open house when I'm waitlisted seem silly?
Also, I'm a vegitarian so I won't even be able to eat at Pat's...
officially rejected from the gsd today. actually i think the letter came yesterday or the day before, but my mother cruelly held off a few days from telling me that a small envelope came from harvard. not that i expected otherwise.
Argh...there is no way I am going to be able to make it to the UCLA open house on Monday -- did anyone else see the PDF of the schedule that went out today? did it imply that studio lotteries happen during the open house? what do you do if you don't go--just sit in the corner waiting for the 2nd semester (or is that their incentive to get people to sign up before they give any fin. aid info)?
If people go, can you report back here for those of us unable to go?
I cannot believe I only have a few weeks to determine if I will be living in NYC, Providence or LA next year. Insane. Thankfully my only assets are a blender, my laptop and a can of Miller Lite in the back of my fridge that is well beyond the born-on date.
i will be able to report back about ucla... can anyone going to the columbia open house report back as well?
same situation again here. how am i supposed to know what end of the country i'm supposed move to when the only place i've lived in is the midwest, and decide this within two weeks no less.
i have a friend who told me to suck it up and just pay all of the deposits... wish i had that much money. it almost seems like they plan these open houses so close together so that you HAVE TO make up your mind ASAP.
yo shaybug -- I can report back on columbia for you, I will probably be able to get to that one...
If I see a name on a nametag at one of these events that even closely resembles one of the names people use on this thread, I am gonna totally crack up.....like Frank Flickbee or Alan Smith+q or Julie StandardSofa.

accepted to grad schools yet?
...finally acccepted to UPenn...
does anyone find it wierd that I got rejected from UW and Berkeley, but accepted to Penn??
no, happens a lot
no, happens a lot. congrats!
+q. - thanks for the tips.

For MArch I
GSD-Rejected

UPenn-Accepted with 1 year AP
Columbia-Accepted
UCLA-Accepted
BS Arch and Math from Ohio State
Anyone have any opinions on whether advanced placement is worth it? I am worried I would miss a year and be behind.

I am waitlisted at penn for the m.arch 1 program.
