Do they have some mass-e-mailing system that sends out rejections/acceptances at certain hours of the day or are they doing this one by one.. Like, umm, are u more likely to receive a notification at 2:00 or 3:00 pm rather than 2:42? ..
Really bored..
Thank you for your kind letters. I was wondering if you could be so kind as to tell me now whether you plan on helping me pay for school. I would really like to attend your fine institution, but I am in a bit of a bind and apparently you forgot to include the scholarship information in your earlier mailing. And the second one with the events calendar for your school. And the third one with the open house information.
I happen to have a ton of money and an empty six-car garage, and I was planning on buying a brand new car every three months for the next three years. Now, if I have to give you the price of a brand new car every single semester for the next three years I will call Vinnie down at the lot and cancel my order. So, if you could just let me know whether to send my checks to you or the Pontiac dealership that'd be great.
FYI - I spoke to a *source* in the Grad.Arch. dept. at Pratt a few days ago. He told me they're on Spring Break this week (ending today) and that decision notices are starting to be mailed out next week.
It doesn't appear that there are too many folks in this thread who applied there, but I thought I'd share the news.
UCLA - I don't recall seeing a decision date in anything they've sent me so far, and still no $$$.
RISD - got the big package today, including a financial aid offer of zilch.
PRATT - now this is interesting. I got the e-mail saying my folder was at the department for review, but clearly it is not. My portfolio came back from them in the mail today.
I spoke with admissions at UCLA yesterday. If the accptance letter you received from them does not mention $$$, then there are no departmental fellowships, scholarships, or what-have-you for you. They were actually pretty unhelpful about financial info.
Your best bet is to contact the grad. office for financial aid and talk to them about loans, etc.
appleate - you say you got this "email" saying your "folder" was at the dept. for "review" when in fact you already have had your portfolio returned to you?
hi everyone.. it's my first time writing here
firstly congrats to everyone who's got good news
I got into GSAPP(march1) and MIT(march1 with 50% scholarship)
It's really difficult to choose one
NYC and Columbia's experimental and digital architecture looks so attractive
but MIT's also good and they offers scholarship as well
if you can afford to pay any program, which would be a better choice?
I'm confused....
I have a similar choice between Columbia and Harvard, although Columbia isn't giving me THAT much less money. If its between 50% of total costs (50000/2 = 25k per year) versus nothing at columbia, MIT would be a better idea. Their history/theory program seems to crank out some pretty hardcore people, and the new chair and dean and their focus on, well, everything as being important to architecture are very exciting. Columbia has the benefit of new york and some exciting people. It's a tough call; but is twice the debt at Columbia worth it? I dont know...
I was all happy about penn, until the reality of finances set in... with the lousy financial aid they provide, I will be over $100,000 in debt by the end of 3 years (not to mention tack on their summer program - another $10,000 down the drain once things add up). Assuming I even qualifiy for personal/student loans... How it GODS NAME do you deal with debt like that?? I too am getting an ulcer - named "lack of finances" or "depression" - yet to decide its name.
What's everyone else's thoughts on finances?? I'm freaking out! :-(
Hello everyone, just received a letter from UT Austin regarding acceptance, MArch I...so I assume everyone should have a letter in the mail by now. Good luck
I saw 888888888's post earlier today, so I knew it was coming. I was OK with that. I didn't expect the GSD. It was a whim to apply there. And get this fellow compulsives, I walked out of my apartment this afternoon and I saw the mailman coming down the block...just a few buildings down. And you know what I did? I kept walking. I didn't wait. I think I am cured.
However, a lil post-script. As I was walking home later this afternoon (11 minutes later). I magazine blew open in my path. And you all know how superstitious I am. It stopped on a page that said: "Judgment day is upon you." No Joke. I sharted.
But then I got home and all I had in my mailbox was a val-pak full of coupons. If you were wondering, I looked and there were no coupons for architecture schools...just mini-blinds, storage facilities and a cleaning service.
I spent last night reading every single post on this thread. Got home about 15 minutes ago in Cambridge and received letter that says I am waitlisted by GSD. I am grateful that it is not an all-out rejection, and must wait until early May to hear any more news.
Being waitlisted sucks.....it's such a non-decision decision.
Bogus!!!
If anyone out there got waitlisted for MARCH II at Penn and you're not going to go, do your 'ole buddy dblefere a favor and let them know sooner rather than later.
So I got into UCLA and Columbia. Am waiting on Sci-Arc.
My decision...CA resident which means UCLA would be super cheap.
Columbia gave me some tuition scholarship abt $12,000 but that still means major debt with living expenses and the rest of tuition.
Question. My aunt lives in Queens and is willing to let me stay with her. What I am wondering is with the crazy hours would it be wise to try and commute into Manhattan to save money? Or would I be looking at taking the train home at scary hours of the night?
How big do you think these waitlists are? 10% of the expected entering class? 20% Less/more? Anyone have waitlist experience or knowledge? I am sure it differs from school to school. This is making me a nutcase.
Also, do you think it is right or wrong to send in an additional letter or rec at this point on the waitlist - I have read undergrad admissions do this sometimes...
adrineaa - you probably don't want to commute from Queens to Columbia and back everyday; depending on where your aunt lives in Queens, it could take 45 minutes to 2 hours to get from her home to Columbia and maybe longer if you're leaving Columbia at 1 or 2am to go home.
Then again, can you really pass up free rent and food?
adrineaa -- where in Queens? It is possible. Queens is huge, though, and it totally depends on what part she lives in...it's possible you could just be a quick bus ride, or potentially a nightmarish train ride...
People do make long treks though. I know a few people at GSAPP that commute from various places in Brooklyn and Queens...it can be done, but it will be a pain if it is far. And it will suck if you are there late and need to make a long trip.
You could always just crash at someone's place in those circumstances...or quickly find a significant other w/ an apt in the area. It's like marrying for a green card.
i'm going to the AA's Diploma School on September. just got confirmation a few days ago. i know its not a grad programme, but i thought i'd drop it in here...
Since we are on the topic of being "waitlisted" I am copying what they say from UM-Ann Arbor about being "waitlisted"... By the way I am one of these unfortunate souls so please if you are not going to UMAA (or any school for that matter) let them know.... as always Thank You Thank You Thank You
I have been assigned to a waitlist. What does that mean and how does the waitlist process work?
The waitlist means that we are interested in your application, but have already offered admission to other candidates. If space becomes available, we will admit students from the waitlist. The waitlist is unranked and spots open, all the waitlisted students will be reviewed again for admission. The chances of being admitted from the waitlist vary from year to year.
At Penn apparently there is an order on the waitlist. I called, and they told me my approximate postion on the waitlist. Near the top she said thankfully. I have no idea how big the waitlist is though. I could be 2 of 3 or 2 of 30. Good question though. Penn is not my top choice, so I am not really holding out that much hope. If I accept somewhere else soon, I will call and have myself taken off the waitlist, for the sake of other souls who would poosibly accept a late offer.
Adrineaa....commuting from Queens would probably start out ok. The novelty of it to someone from out of town would probably last you a little while. Time to read, you'd be outside instead of underground, etc. But as your schedule got more hectic and your nights later and your mornings earlier, I think you'd be miserable. Atleast I would. Especially depending on the location. If it is Long Island City...maybe. But if it is by LGA...forget it.
strugs your hillarious... ia ssume you know this to... I forgot where you have been accepted... give me the breakdown.
At this point all the schools that I haven't heard anything from are practically screwed... The only school I have heard from and thankfully been accepted to is Columbia ! 1 out of 7... so at this point I have already set the wheels in motion to move to NYC.
I am going to write the other schools a really keen letter stating that I am no longer interested in them because there school is obviously incosiderate and not well organized. Thank you very much but no thank you!
Don't I wish that were true! Damn GSD is killing me. I have practically lost hope but I am an optimist so we'll see!

Auguste, thanks for the .pdf on ut on that other thread. the test isn't that difficult but more a matter of how much effort one is willing expend. i'm speculating here, but i think at the transfer level they're trying to gauge originality, technique, and care, in that order. does anyone have thoughts on cooper or the application/rejection process? it'd be great to share some impressions.
standardsofa, sorry to hear that. where else did you apply?
adrineaa, that is a bit far. If you end up at Columbia, you better make friends or bring a sleeping bag with you.
accepted to grad schools yet?

i don't have my letter in front of me, does anyone know/remember when UCLA wanted notification of enrollment?

appleate - you say you got this "email" saying your "folder" was at the dept. for "review" when in fact you already have had your portfolio returned to you?

MArch06-
the letter that ucla sent me says that a statement of intent must be filled out online no later than april 15.
gsd reject! i am so shocked! no, really i am!
(kidding. no one understood why i didn't want to go to haaavahd. i only applied bc i live in boston.)

Waitlisted at penn.
so I'm finishing off at:
yale -waitlisted
penn - waitlisted
ucla - accepted
risd - rejected
ucb - rejected
hmmm...I guess I'm not actually finished at all. What are the odds of getting waitlisted at 2 of the 5 schools applied to?
How big do you think these waitlists are? 10% of the expected entering class? 20% Less/more? Anyone have waitlist experience or knowledge? I am sure it differs from school to school. This is making me a nutcase.

Anyone applying to any Florida Schools?
i'm going to the AA's Diploma School on September. just got confirmation a few days ago. i know its not a grad programme, but i thought i'd drop it in here...
accepted: ucla, berkeley, columbia?, univ of michigan
still waiting: sci-arc.
i got this weird plackage from columbia that says they look forward to having me there... so i guess i'm in? really vague letter.
did anyone get any money from UCLA? it seems like funding is tight there.

Any UT austin MArch I types out there? are you attending summer academy?
Did anyone with a B.A. already apply to Cooper Union?

yes, i applied to cooper. still experiencing residual trauma from the home test.

dblefere, Auguste Perret, strugs -
Thanks for the feedback. Myaunt lives in Forest Hills within walking distance of the train but not sure how long it takes to get to Columbia.
Still trying to figure out if its worth the expense versus in-state to UCLA. Am going to visit Columbia next week.
Auguste, thanks for the .pdf on ut on that other thread. the test isn't that difficult but more a matter of how much effort one is willing expend. i'm speculating here, but i think at the transfer level they're trying to gauge originality, technique, and care, in that order. does anyone have thoughts on cooper or the application/rejection process? it'd be great to share some impressions.

i apologize, i wasn't being honest. to the best of my knowledge i'll hear back the first or second week of april. good luck.
