yeah, i know, i don't want to be whiny or anything, but it's scary to think about the prospect of living in new york without any real income and 30000+ tuition to boot. the amount of debt our generation is taking on for school really depresses me.
skeerd, sorry if i came off like that, i'm particularly antsy about everything today and i'm finding it hard to be positive about anything right now
I don't know how great this tread is addictionbomb; I think it shows that if you put a bunch of applicants together via internet access, they will completely drive themselves crazy. No wonder architects are a weird bunch.
skeerd, i will add myself to that one, money sucks..... well more exactly not having money and the prospect of moving to a place where the cheapest rent for a studio apt. is $1000 sucks.
auguste have you checked your mail yet today? just got home and those columbia acceptances STILL haven't made it to the east village. nor the gsd acceptances. nor the berkeley e-cceptances.
jwo - I wouldn't say I really, really, really want to go to sciarc, but considering Penn and sciarc are the last schools I have yet to hear from, I'm thinking sciarc is the only other place I just might stand a chance getting another acceptance - I only have one so far. Considering the UW wants to know my decision by April 14th or something, I'd like to know about my last schools sooner than later.
NYC is not for the timid. Most of my friends who are in arch programs made their final decision based on the money given.
You have to remember that after you graduate, you're not going to be making a lot of money. The last thing you need is 90k in debt.
last year i got a 4-3 -- got into gsd, penn, and risd, e-jected by princeton. no need to say i was mad psyched for a couple of days. and then... the financial reality kicked in... hard. i'm international, and that means no fin aid at most schools, thus 120-160k+ in loans... i just couldn't do it man... i looked toshiko in the eyes and asked her if she thought GSD was worth that much, and she couldn't say yes... (after all, she did go to cooper union, which is free...)
well, nothing changed this year, but at least i had enough time to make sure i know what i'm getting myself into...two weeks seems a bit too little time for deciding whether or not you want to sign away your fin security for the next 5-10 years, now doesn't it?
Oh! luciab83, you're in the EAST village??? That might take an extra day or two (with all that traffic and all.) You shouldn't worry about it too much. Now that you've changed your name, I can't remember, have you been accepted to any schools yet?
Damn! Toshiko didn't even bother to lie . . . well, you have to respect that (I think I love her.)
It really is murder to have to dish out 120k for education.
auguste- no i have not. ejected from princeton, rejected from yale...... waiting on berkeley, penn, gsd, columbia, sci-arc and pratt, which was sort of a spontaneous last minute thing. and you?
bnev.....do NOT go to RPI....just bad bad bad all around....I took a few classes there and now I'm transferring out....funding has been cut drastically, and nobody will teach you a damn thing, saying that if they were to actually teach, the buildings that you create would thus be predetermined....and blah blah blah....I was told that this method of teaching has won them many competitions, but have you seen some of the latest "winners?" Definately NOT quality architecture!
luciab83- I just applied to 3 schools (Columbia, Princeton and Yale (I like having all my apples in the same basket.)) And Columbia is my last hope (pressure!?!?! what pressure???)
However, I may apply to NJIT if all else fails (their deadline is June.)
Auguste- well at least the rejections are out of the way! Better to get those out of the way first. Now if only the mailman could just get himself to brooklyn. And if he could swing by the east village on the way, even better.
don't sell out. i like the apples all in one basket. you should go where you want and only where you want. wait another year and make it happen. when you're 65-70 and retired, you'll look back and not even realize your "career" was a year short.
MArch06 - I don't think going to NJIT is selling out. It's just a plan b. I would like to be in a program (Columbia was my second choice) this fall and I have always felt that education is what you make it. If my passion for architecture is real, it shouldn't matter whether I'm in an Ivy League school or (cough cough) a no-name school.
it wasn't meant as a shot. you have your reasons. i was just trying to give a general pep talk. i was previously 0-8....i could have applied to a school i could get into, but i chose to wait and go where i wanted. just sounded like you want one of the other schools you mentioned. if it doesn't matter to you, more power to you. don't give up the dream though....im living proof.
I appreciate that and hopefully plan b doesn't have to be implenated. The 'shoot for the top' theory sounded real good back in Dec/Jan. Not so after the Princeton e-ject and Yale rejection.
Then again, I'm so old!!!
So MArch06, where are you going?
Luciab83 - no mail today; well, I got my cellphone bill and I will never text message again, but that's neither here or there.
well i wish you luck...in whatever you do. im no spring chicken either, but im a firm believer that things happen for a reason so im sure you'll do well no matter what...all you have to do is want it!
yeah i know....i have a friend, well not really a friend, from undergrad that graduated from there [cal] a year or two ago...i guess its time i dig up his email.
accepted to grad schools yet?
This just gets more interesting by the second. It looks like Columbia is moving its way eastward and lowering its scholarship awards.
thanks skeerd, although i really dont think there is much skill too it, besides being good at being poor.
flickbee, what you got is probably better than nothing... if it makes you feel better, some people didn't get any money.
i'm all the way in puerto rico.
can't wait to get to baltimore to see if i have a letter from columbia.
i'd be so happy if i did.
ps, this thread is great. provides quite a nice bit of timely info we could't get otherwise.
you guys rock,
just wanted to say that.
now back to lurking up until i get that eject from ucla or something from columbia.
I hope pity acceptances do exist!!! And I will happily take one!
Me too, Auguste!

no worries, i'm in the same boat. the financial realities are setting in and killing the buzz.
ok now it's really time for me to stop refreshing this page and go crawl under a rock.
Does anybody really, really, really want to go to SCI-Arc?
I don't know how great this tread is addictionbomb; I think it shows that if you put a bunch of applicants together via internet access, they will completely drive themselves crazy. No wonder architects are a weird bunch.
skeerd, i will add myself to that one, money sucks..... well more exactly not having money and the prospect of moving to a place where the cheapest rent for a studio apt. is $1000 sucks.
let's get a studio and split it four ways. we're not really ever gonna be there anyways

march06- yes opt 3, is that what you got accepted for?
no im in for option 2
I am still at work dusty (and a co-worker just asked if I heard from the schools yet ('er, yeah, I'm still waiting'))
MArch06- i'm waiting for berkeley for m.arch 1 equiv. which is option 3, yes. what track did you apply for?
nothing for berkeley on my end...
im option 2, the two year program.
last year i got a 4-3 -- got into gsd, penn, and risd, e-jected by princeton. no need to say i was mad psyched for a couple of days. and then... the financial reality kicked in... hard. i'm international, and that means no fin aid at most schools, thus 120-160k+ in loans... i just couldn't do it man... i looked toshiko in the eyes and asked her if she thought GSD was worth that much, and she couldn't say yes... MArch06,

email from berkeley
is there one written for me?
refresh my email
im telling you its like pledging a fraternity.
what's your status dmc?
MArch06 - I don't think going to NJIT is selling out. It's just a plan b. plus NJIT will be 45k for 3 years.

status as in acceptances/ rejections? if so, there it goes:
princeton-ejected
yale-waitlisted
mit, columbia, penn - ???
gsd-97% no
where am i going....hmmm. well that's the question of the hour. 3 years at UCLA or 2 at berkeley? decisions, decisions....
this is not easy.
MArch06 - that is tough. I have heard great things about Berkeley, but it always about their undergrad program. Good luck!
yeah i know....i have a friend, well not really a friend, from undergrad that graduated from there [cal] a year or two ago...i guess its time i dig up his email.
im leaving for the day. good luck to everyone!
