part 2/3
...not willing to let go of the laid-back weekend...after 2 full days of conference and associated activities, day 3 would be our relaxed exit from St. Petersburg, FL.
Sunday morning view from the hotel room...
...11 am checkout, then a quick trip by the pier and inverted pyramid (on the horizon to the right in the image above)...
...u-turn at the pier-amid, then a short drive along the waterfront...
...open space on the water, condos across the street. Not all Florida cities get this part right...
The only activity left on the conference agenda for Sunday:
"Tour by Design" of Historic Northeast St. Petersburg & Swimming Party at North Shore Pool, hosted by Emerging Tampa Bay Architects
translation: no swimming architects.
burgers and hot dogs at the community pool.
architphil on the grill.
pool complex recently renovated by Wannemacher Russel Architects.
tour of pool complex by Jason of WRA.
the client for this project was the City of St. Petersburg. The existing facility included one olympic pool, some grandstands, and a 50's modern open-air entrance area w/locker rooms. The original entry, like many older pool complexes in Florida, was through the locker rooms. Little boy says bye to Mom, meet you on the other side...not the best scenario. The renovation would only require a few thousand square feet of program space, including a second pool, a classroom, and a new entrance/control point (shown above). The scheme, as built, manages to seem larger than it is by implying exterior spaces not included in the program.

the contractor and architect collaborated on the design of skate-stops for the concrete bench (at the foot of the folded wall/canopy)...2x4's set into the forms...contractor wins...
when the pool closes, a fence slides neatly through a slot in the folded concrete wall/canopy.
